In both Spencer's Mountain and in The Waltons, one of the reasons that Clay-Boy and/or John-Boy was sent to college by the many sacrifices of both family's was so that Clay-Boy/John-Boy could help the younger kids lead a better life.
Have you noticed John-Boy's college experience helping the kids to better their lives?
I am not asking inf John-Boy help his brothers and sisters in general, but rather did his going to COLLEGE help the younger childredn. Did the parents get a return on their investment?

I know that Mary Ellen went to a dance at Boatright but she ruined everthing for Johnboy's date in the process by losing the ring she had borrowed and Johnboy's date went after the ring and was blamed for trespass and was never able to be pledged into the sorority she had hoped to join.

I think John-Boy was the ideal older brother. He respected his parents, helped his siblings, and also had some faults. Who doesn't?

I think John Boy (and the parents also) inspired the others to go after their dreams and be what they wanted to be.

A return on the parents investment may have included serveal things such as: role modeling from John-boy, possibly finaces for the kids education, self-esteem building to get them out of the "country boy" mindset, what ever it took to give the kids a better life.

I certainly believe that anyone's college experience can have a positive impact on their younger siblings, particularly if a person is the first in their family to attend college, as John-Boy was. Jason eventually realized that he could approach music from an academic standpoint and decided to enter the Kleinberg Conservatory. Mary Ellen later attended nursing school at the University of Virginia. Erin entered secretarial school. John-Boy's experience at Boatwright certainly seemed to have positively affected his brothers and sisters.
