We can't leave out the members of the Hamner Family who are no longer with us. Without them there would be no Waltons
Birth: Jan. 13, 1930 Death: Nov. 22, 2004 Williamsburg Williamsburg City Virginia, USA
Sister of Earl Hamner, Jr., creator of "The Waltons" television program and the real-life "John Boy."
Marion Hamner Hawkes inspired the character of Mary Ellen. She described herself as the "tomboy" of the family. Marion liked to play golf and paint. She created a series of note cards and a cookbook. Marion lived in the Williamsburg, VA area with her husband Glenn, a retired psychologist. They served as volunteers at Colonial Williamsburg's Information Center. They have two sons, Robert and William.

I am so sorry about Marion's passing. The character of "Mary Ellen" was quite a tribute to someone and now I will remember who it was. I also had heard that the brother who was the basis for "Jim Bob" passed away in 2004 on my son's 18th birthday. I always thought the character "Jim Bob" reminded me of my own son.
Thank you to the people who started this part of the forum.

I absolutely LOVE Colonial Williamsburg and have been there several times. To think I may have been helped at the Visitor Center by the real live Mary Ellen. It's nice to know I had something in common with her.
