I have been intending to write this post for awhile, but I just never got around to it. I am posting it on the general board, hoping that everyone will see it. I will eventually move it to the Info about the forum board. A few weeks ago, someone sent me a PM asking if she could have more than one keeper. I didn't have a definite answer for her, so I set up a poll. The overwhelming choice of the voting forum members was one keeper per member. So, that will definitely be the rule. You may have only one keeper. If you have more than one right now, please choose which one you no longer want, and let us know, so that it will be available to others. The other part of this, which wasn't addressed in the poll, was the number of signature images allowed. There are people who have only one keeper, but they have 2 or 3 images in their signature. I hesitate to tell them to remove some of them, since they have had them there for awhile, so I would like for us to have a discussion about it. What do the rest of you think? Some say that it clutters up the threads to have so many images in one person's signature. Others say it doesn't bother them. I guess I could set up a poll for this too, but first I'll see if we have any discussion about it. Today, something else came up about the keepers that I hadn't thought of before, and this concerns a person's commitment or interest in the forum. How long should a person be a member of the forum before he/she becomes a keeper of something? How many messages or threads on the forum should that person participate in before becoming a keeper? Should a person be able to join the forum and post only one message saying he wants to be a keeper of something? Should that person be expected to at least introduce himself or herself first and actually participate in the forum for awhile? I realize that many people visit this forum as guests for a long time before actually joining it. They may actually feel a part of the forum just because they have been reading it for so long. What does everyone think about this? I am in the process of writing some new forum rules, but I'm waiting on a decision about the keepers and signature images. We had a list of forum rules which we lost when the forum changed to the new format. I had them saved on my computer, however, and I have been updating them. I will post them soon, when I decide what the rules should be regarding the keepers. Please comment on this if you have an opinion about it all. Thanks! Brenda (forum administrator)

^^^^ This and how long can someone keep their keeper without posting?
There are some keepers who ask for the keeper and then disappear hogging the thing that they keep. Can you force someone to post?
Is there a point in having a keeper if you are not going to post and thus let others see the awesome keeper?
I notice member's keepers and it is an easy way to tell who has been posting and who has not.
They also show our personalities somewhat.

I am still a very new member here so I am not as much in the "loop" as many of you seasoned forum members, but I do agree it would be good to have a discussion on both issues to see what the consensus of the group is. When I first found my way to this forum in February, I read over a lot of the threads and decided to join right away, as I knew I wanted to be here with those who loved the Walton's as much as I do. My intention was to take part here as much as time allowed. I will say that I am one that asked to be a keeper soon after I joined, while I was still a "novice." I didn't see anything specifically stated in the guidelines, so I asked for Martha Corrine, my favorite supporting actress. But, having said that, I see a very valid point in having some guidelines for keepers. I would have been very happy to have waited, "put in my time," and been a part of this forum longer and/or had more posts before I asked to be a keeper. I did introduce myself first and do think it is very important for all new members to do it. It's so nice to learn a little bit about each new member. As far as the signature images, I personally think pages and the threads are a little more pleasing to the eye without a lot of images, but that is just my opinion. Perhaps a poll on each of these might not be a bad idea to get a good feel as to what the majority of members would like to see here. It will be good to see other opinions on these matters. Thank you, Brenda!

I think that it would be a good idea to have to be a participating member for a month before being a keeper.
I think that if you have a keeper and say after a month (or we can have a poll to decide an appropriate amount of time) you haven't posted or been seen here you should get a PM or email warning from Brenda that you will lose your keeper if you don't return within a few days. If no response then your keeper goes up for adoption. If you know you will be away from the forum for an extended period of time you can post here or send Brenda a PM letting her know and your keeper will be safe.
I don't mind more than one signature as long as they aren't overwhelming and take over the entire message screen.

Scarlett, you make a good point. Sometimes a person becomes a "keeper" of something, then they disappear, never to be heard from again. Really, a person should be posting on the forum if he/she wants to be a keeper of something. It lets everyone else see a little bit into that person's thinking and what it is about The Waltons that they identify with or admire. Maybe we should have a rule that says something like: "If you haven't posted in (insert length of time here), you will lose your right to be the keeper of that object/person, etc.
Jan, When you first joined the forum, you posted right away, introducing yourself, letting us know that you were a long time Waltons fan, and that you intended to become a part of the forum. I had no problem with you becoming a keeper of Martha Corinne.
Carol, your idea is a good one, for me to send an email to a person who has been inactive on the forum for some time. We'll just have to decide the length of time.
As far as signature images are concerned, I really don't mind if a person has 2 or 3 images, as long as they are not excessively large. If someone does post a very large image, I have the ability to go in and change the size myself, so that is not a problem.
Keep the ideas coming, folks.

What does everyone think about this? I think it will be hard to prevent new members from having a keeper until they have been here for an established period of time. Anyone with photoshop or any similar program can make one and use it right away. How would any rule about when new members can have a keeper be enforced?

I can remove it if I want to. Good ideas Brenda and you are the leader here. But maybe some way if there was a board like say groups of people that run an apartment or condominium complex. A group of people who have been here a long time who have some type of say in ideas that go on around here. But its the forum you run so its your final call on things. Just a thought. WmFan

WmFan That's not a bad idea, wmfan, but I don't feel comfortable choosing who would be in the group. I've already been accused of having "favorites" on the forum. I think I would rather just get some ideas from anyone who wants to post in this thread, then make a final decision myself.

Martha Corrine looks like The Emperor from star wars. Well, now that you mention it, yes, I can see the resemblance, at least in that picture.

I really have a love-hate relationship with keepers and signature images for the reasons that they take forever to load if you don't have high speed and it takes so much time to page through the pictures to get to a new message. This website is actually pretty reasonable for that, but there are some that are just endless. I would like to see the images occupy less space if possible. As to your other question, perhaps you could tie the option of selecting a keeper to the number of messages posted instead of the length of time. That would reward the enthusiastic members. It would also serve as motivation for new members to post - not that the Waltons Forum suffers from inactivity - that's one of the reasons I like to visit. Thanks for asking for opinions.

Bucky, Anyone who has a slow connection can choose to have signatures not show up. Just go to your profile, Click Edit Profile, Click the Settings tab, and scroll down to show signatures. Tying the selection of a keeper to a certain number of posts sounds like a good idea too. Thanks for the suggestion.
