This isn’t one of my favorite episodes but I’m watching it now and I just noticed something I’d forgotten in this episode that made me laugh out loud. When Alvira fake sprains her ankle the look on Olivia’s face is absolutely priceless!! Michael Learned is such a good actress!

Elvira was an interesting character study for me: pretentious, a great sense of entitlement, false pride, and living in a world of her own making. I liked watching her discover the 'real' world of the 'have-nots' and, having just become a 'have-not', she had no idea how to live in that world.
Her fake trip on the stairs was an act of desperation on her part. She was terrified of facing her world again with nothing. In the end, John-Boy teaches her how to, and shows her that she still has the power and talent to move emotions in people. She leaves the Walton home riding proudly in the front seat of John's truck.
The song she sings to herself when she's 'snockered' is 'Poor Butterfly' and, in relation to the episode, it is an allegory to the life she fears she has lost forever. As you listen to the magnificent Judy Garland singing it, just replace 'him' with 'my life' and you'll see what I mean:

If Alvira stayed with the Baldwins she would be constatly soused on the Recipe.
