The homecoming-John is late , theyy take the horse and sled to look for him, and when John boy gets back, SHE TEARS INTO HIM for being around them.. The Patricia Neal "Olivia" couldnt stand them at all.. But then after he explained what happened and the jug contained egg nog she sort of repented. She said "I ought be ashamed of myself"

In "The reunion" episode, didnt John boy and John sr have to beg Olivia to come? cant remember the details about that,, I think so, and then she says 'just this once' and explains it won't be a regular occurance. I never really thought that Olivia acted overly rudely though from Season 1 onward, her misjudgements never seemed to be worse than anybody elses... Having said that, I really quite dislike Olivia in The Homecoming; she's so suspicious of John-Boy and seems pretty frightening whenever she gets angry!

Olivia was the first Walton to come in connect with them at Ike's store in The Homecoming.

The baldwin's were sweet old spinster's and loved by all in the community , except by the wives of the men that had an ocassional nip of the recipe. They caused no harm to anyone. I don't see why alot of women shunned them off ?? Jealousy maybe ?? They would have given refuge to those in need , and that is a sign of a true southern lady.

It seemed plain to me from the start that everyone knew they brewed hooch; to some it was a no-go area, to others the walk over was well worth it! Gotta love those ladies. ;D

I think the reason was that she did not want the children to get the idea that drinking was ok because the Baldwins did it.....

I think she means that Olivia didn't want the kids to think that drinking was OK.
Who could forget John-Boy's and Jason's faces the first time they had a lil nip? I can understand Livvy's concern but I like the ladies too much to fault them.

The lady's never regarded the recipe as white lightening , white shine , they felt it was no more then a sip of sweet tea for all to enjoy on a day when your bones chilled you to the core. Or Your feeling down and needed a pick'me-up. Or your down right parched from the heat in the south.

I liked how Olivia warmed up the Baldwins after season 1. Who could be cross with such sweet ladies? I loved it when they wanted to adopt Jason!

I seem to remember a few Waltons episodes where John scolded Olivia for being snobbish and uppity or some reasomable facsimile thereof. Don't know if that episodes involved the Baldwin ladies or not.
I think Olivia was sometimes prudish for appearances sake more than out of conviction, given that she had seven children (!), a glass of bubbly or two at the gazebo and more than a few fingers of beer at the Dew Drop. She also was a mid-teen bride, marrying a man who wasn't a Baptist.
And she had long tresses to boot! Just like the saloon ladies. LOL.

That was in the first couple of episodes when he still wore sloppy hair and she was 20 lbs heavier and had brownish-red hair pulled down over her ears. He also told Livy and Grandma they were a couple of old hens. No way would he get away with that in the seasons where they spiffed Livy up.

Just watching Season 1 - Livy does acted diferently, and I have noticed her reaction to the Baldwins ladies - I also noticed that Livy seemed alot more religious in the 1st few seasons, or at least expressed her views/beliefs more. in my opinion I liked her better in later seasons.
