I can't say I ever imagined any of the characters having sex during any of the episodes. Though, I am often told I'm blind to that kind of thing!
On the subject on the origin of words, I often wonder about "boyfriend"/"girlfriend". They're words I've never really liked that much (I think 'partner' is much better) because it sounds like a childish way to describe your significant other (even though some people who are entirely serious use the word). And they sort of imply that you have no other friends of the opposite sex at all, even though that rarely is the case! I can't imagine the words being used in the 1800s, but they use it in The Waltons. I don't know if it's accurate, but that's the earliest I know of it being used historically.

That is one thing I noticed about the show. While they were very open and upfront about many subjects, sex was never mentioned.

That is one thing I noticed about the show. While they were very open and upfront about many subjects, sex was never mentioned. Earl Hamner wanted a real family show--which was very different than the "jiggle tv" that was prevalent in the 70's, so that was intentional. Plus...people back then didn't talk about sex much anyway. It was considered very private. The episode with Elizabeth and Drew was pretty "out there," actually, now that I think about it. (for The Waltons I mean)
Personally, I could do with people not talking about sex anymore. I'm so over it. I really don't want to know what people do in the privacy of their own homes and with whom they do it. Honestly...please spare me.

Honestly...please spare me. I am this way too. I don't want to see anybody kissing more than a peck on the cheek. I fast forward through the sex scenes if I can.
Does anybody really want to see the sex scenes on regular programing? There are other formats for viewing sex, so I say take it out of the mainstream viewing.
and for the last time, NONE OF THE WALTON KIDS HAD SEX OUTSIDE OF MARRIAGE! Period.

LOL Scarlett!
After seeing "The Heartbreaker" again, I'm more convinced that Jason was with whiny trampy thing and that's why he was so hurt when she went in the hotel with that other guy. It doesn't make Jason flawed or a bad person, it just happened. In fact my guess would be that none of the boys made it to marriage without going there first.
We like to look at the old days and imagine that everyone was virtuous and morally straight and it's mostly depicted that way. BUT if you talk to someone who was around back then (my mom and grandparents for example), it's not that people didn't do those kinds of things, they just didn't broadcast it.

I agree that I don't want to see sex scenes on regular TV programming, and I think it was wise that the writers left us guessing about the cast on the Waltons. But I do think Jim Bob probably had sex with that Kathy girl who pursued him, since he thought he was probably the father of the child in her fictitious pregnancy.

Unless he was naive and thought a girl could get pregnant from heavy petting/messing around.
My maternal grandparents never told my uncle (who is three years older than me) about the birds and the bees. On my uncle's wedding day, papaw came to give him the talk. My uncle told him to save his breath, that he already knew all about it. I wish he had just heard him out...it would have been interesting to know what he had to say. LOL!
I also know someone else who's two years older than me, their parents never told them the first thing about sex...ever!!

My mother was 16 years old and she came home in tears because she had to squeeze through the door to the candy store with a fat man and she thought that could get her pregnant. I was horrified that my mother was so naive as old as 16! So when I began asking questions (much, much younger than 16 lol) she gave me "The Lifecycle Encyclopedia." I think there were 4 slim volumes. I read it from cover to cover. (I was a voracious reader and my comprehension level was several grades ahead of my actual school grade.) I understood the biology of reproduction extremely well for a third-grader. My mother wasn't big on talking about stuff, though. So I was left to figure out the emotional part on my own. (Although she did tell me she didn't think anyone should "have sex" before marriage and she said she didn't. And I believe that.) My sister was a few years younger than I and I kept telling my mother she should have "the talk" with my sister. She told me that when my sister wanted to talk about it, she would come to her. Well, my sister never did come to her to have the talk, my mother skirted it and my sister learned through real-life experience.

Forever, my parents never told me about sex, or girls, or expressed interest in any career I wanted. Never said a thing about any girl I dated, nothing at all. I am sure I am not the only one in that boat.

I don't remember what episode it was, but one time John Boy asked Grandma something about a first kiss from the girl's point of view. He needed to know for a story he was writing, and Grandma told him she remembered the first time she was kissed, it scared her to death because she thought she was going to have a baby.

Your last sentence is right on !! I "said" something similar here a while ago, and everyone jumped on me .... but I strongly believe it is true -- according to my parents, grandparents, etc.... They also were pretty good at fudging birthdates when necessary !!

What is this sex thing you are all talking about? The stork brings babies to families.
I think its very possible that the phrase "make love" was used to describe acting lovingly toward each other, like hugging and necking and generally opening up emotionally to each other.
How did the phrase "make love" become a moniker for sex anyway? Love is not being made or created. Love is being expressed.
Unfortunately, sex sells. Gone are virtues like privacy, discretion, intimacy, decency, etc..
Commercials are overtly sexual these days. I guess crude and rude are in. There is a Liquid Plumr commercial that blatantly shows a woman fantasizing about taking part in a sexual threesome. It's plain disgusting. I emailed the maker of Liquid Plumr and told them they must not have confidence in the quality of their product if they have to use such sexually explicit commercials to sell Liquid Plumr.
Here's what I wrote to the Liquid Plumr company:
The commercial for your Double Impact product is vile and disgusting. If you have to resort to sexual imagery and innuendo to sell your product, then you must not have that much confidence in your product. What is clear is the immoral sexual activity that your company obviously endorses - promiscuous, anonymous three-way sex. I thought you manufacture and sell drain cleaning products, not contraceptives. Why not be different? Why not present a commercial that highlights the effectiveness of Double Impact, as opposed to dwelling in the lowest common denominator and using explicit sexual references to sell your product? I will not buy any of your products. I do not support companies that show a lack of decency in their advertising and communication with the public, and I do not appreciate having my intelligence insulted by a company that thinks I will buy their product based on the sexual references and innuendo in their commercials.

I am not a prude, but geez...I just saw a Dish Network commercial that made me feel like I had to leave the room (and I'm here alone!) Two good looking guys talking about the size of their "package." After a few seconds you realize they're comparing the packages they get with Dish vs. DirectTv. Really? I need to watch this smut on the COMMERCIALS of all things? ugh!!!!!!!!!!!

..... and the "creative geniuses" who come up with commercials like the two mentioned above undoubtedly think they are being terribly clever -- like it takes high intellect to produce such low, obvious/predictable, obnoxious, and down-right stupid ads !!!
