I started researching the JOSH role because during a marathon recently, I thought I had seen Todd Bridges reprise the role after James Bond III had also played it..... I thought maybe they had brought in Bond because perhaps he could play trumpet (?) and then they brought Bridges back..... but I now have learned that Bond came back again .... WHAT ??
Here's the breakdown: Sep 22, 1977 -- "The Stray" with Bridges Jan 26, 1978 -- "The Festival" with Bond Nov 16, 1978 -- "The Illusion" with Bridges Jan 17, 1980 -- "The Prodigal" with Bond
So, could Bond play trumpet -- or was it all to do with the actors' schedules and availability?? Need my experts out there to jump in !!

Saw him on LHTP too. Then a few nights ago I was watching the episode where Harley is accused of being an escaped prisoner and their son is someone I have never seen before.

I do hate to say this, but I think there may have been an element of "they all look the same" in this. This was the Seventies and I think the Producers thought nobody would really notice. A jar of the recipe to anybody who can identify the only other returning character who was played (like the Foster bros) by three different actors.

Wow.... thanks, Sambda -- I had recently only noticed Bridges/Bond -- didn't investigate the "role" closely.... interesting that there was also Jason Moses. I hate to think the producers were operating the way you mention but you're probably right. Oh, maybe not, let's not think that way.... Any idea about my trumpet question? Was Bond a trumpeter? Yikes. Do we get any hints at all Seasons, environment, approx. age

I need to sleep tonight.... well, if not tonight, tomorrow night Yes, doesn't include the pilot ("The Homecoming"), and it's three different actors (there are quite a few with two). Also doesn't include babies/kids (so no John-Curtis, who was technically played first by twins in different scenes, and then another actor when older).

I wonder if the character of Josh's brother was given the name of Jody to connect in some way with the actress by the same name------or if there was a black family that Earl knew when he was growing up, was their last name Foster ?

Why would they want to connect him with the movie star who was only 10 years old when the Waltons started?

Just to shed some light on the 1970s since I feel Sambda's remark is way off base. That decade was a very liberal one in terms of blacks taking their place in society and culture - and in particular television. I'm not suggesting they were perfect, but I don't for one minute believe the producers of the Waltons were that insensitive about race. I think the more logical explanation is that Josh and Jody were only occasional parts (more spoken of then seen) so the actors moved on to other things. Todd Bridges certainly faired very well.

Oh, I don't know if Sambda should be totally discounted. I hate to think it, but as progressive as we were in the 1970's, old ideas don't die overnight. (I believe progressive is a more accurate term than liberal.)
It wouldn't necessarily be a lack of sensitivity on the part of producers.... I suppose it might be the psychology (proven?) that peoples of different races may find it somewhat difficult to "separate" individuals ... i.e., it may be more difficult for an "Occidental" to notice subtle differences in the facial features of individual "Orientals" and vice versa. (I'm not sure if I'm using the right terminology here.) Not politically correct, of course.
Playing devil's advocate here.... I learned about this in a college course and now I want to see what I can find online..... so, later....
