All the beautiful scenery in the episodes - was some of the scenery filming shot in Virginia at all? I have been to the Lynchburg and Charlottsville Va areas before, thought I recognized some of the scenery on the tv series? I am hoping someone will have an answer. I just love watching the reruns after I get home from work. So soothing of a program. Takes me back to a simpler time when I was little and we all looked forward to thursday night on CBS with the Waltons! p.s I used to get the Blue Ridge Chronicles in the mail in the early 1990's do they still print them and send them out?? thanks !

A lot of the outdoor scenes where shot at a place called Frazier Park, north of L.A. Not sure how they did some of the scenes where there is a beautiful view. Maybe some kind of big back drop or something. Not sure about the Blue Ridge Chronicles. If fan club members still get that or not. I don't think they do.

I forgot. None of the show was filmed in Virginia as far as I know and have heard. All done at Warner Brothers and Frazier Park and I think maybe another place or two but not Virginia.

But the area they filmed in must be awfully similar looking to Virginia?

Warner Brothers does a good job at making things look authentic. I think it was you Moe that mentioned spotting a palm tree when we were discussing bloopers. Palm trees don't grow in Virginia.

Not near as many pine trees in the Virginia mountains as what I see in The Waltons episodes.

Yes, I did see a palm tree when the truck was driving down a road and everyone was in the back. Can't recall which episode it was but I had been through the entire series like 5 or 6 times before I noticed the palm tree. Same with the door in the living room that went to grandma's bedroom. I never noticed that either until about the 6th time I watched the entire series. I was asleep at the wheel!

Slightly unrelated, but in the later seasons, the characters seemed to spend a lot less time in any scenic locations than in the earlier episodes, you only really seen the scenery during the opening narration. It's something I wish they'd kept.

Palm trees are not native to a lot of places that I have seen them. I am beginning to think that there was a time that palm trees were posh. Tons of fancy, big farms have palm tree lined drives.

BMCGill is correct. The filming of the Waltons was done in California, in the Frazier Park area. This area covers Frazier Park, Cuddy Valley, Pinion Pines, Lockwood Valley and Pine Mountain (all of which is in the Las Padres National Forest). I'm a resident of this area (for over 20 years) and can identify EXACTLY which area the opening scenes are filmed--or, when a Walton actor is in a particular mountainous area (even the road they are driving on). In high school, I loved watching the Waltons--little did I know I would, one day, live in the area of particular scenes. It's fun trivia By the way, there aren't any palm trees up here in the forest, either. But, we do have some beautiful views...you have to drive outside of Pine Mountain area (still Las Padres) to see them. I'm convinced this is the area where some of those mountain views were captured. Blessings, DLM

So funny that I saw this post today. I just said to my husband tonight, "Wow, I bet people see this scenery (we were watching the opening to The Furlough) and fall in love with VA. In reality -- VA Blue Ridge don't look anything like it!!
