I was watching an episode of the Waltons this morning and I have a question? The episode had the character of Martha Corrine? I am sure the character most of been based on the great grandmother of Earl Hamner. Does any one know if this would be true? Was this episode based on what really happened to Hamner family during the depression. I do know that many families were displaced when the Blue Ridge Parkway was constructed during the Depression. I live in Va so it pleases me to ride over the Rockfish River and think about the family I grew up watching on TV.

Reply to vamountaingirl66:
The episode was "The Conflict" (a two-part episode) and was written by Jeb Rosebrook. According to the excerpt in Goodnight John-Boy by Earl Hamner and Ralph Griffin, Jeb Rosebrook had a co-worker at the University of Virginia who related the story to him of how his family had been forcefully evicted from their home when the Skyline Drive was being constructed. Twenty years later when Rosebrook sat down to write his episode he remembered this story, used it as the basis for "The Conflict" and named Martha Corinne after two of his aunts. The excerpt also credits Earl Hamner's mother for helping with the research. There you have it!

Thank you so much for your info. It is great to know how the story of how this episode was created and that it was based on a real life conflict. Could you also tell me about Goodnight John-Boy? Is it a book and can I purchase it? Thanks

To vamountaingir66: Yes, the book was published by Cumberland House publishers in Nashville, Tennessee. The copy I have is paperback and is loaded with pictures and all kinds of interesting trivia. I'm not sure if there is a hardback version. I'm sure you can purchase it on this website (I think they sell products related to the show). Check the homepage and look under each of the links to find out for sure. If not, most of the major booksellers such as Barnes and Noble carry it. If you can't find it anywhere contact the publisher: Cumberland House Publishing, Inc. 431 Harding Industrial Drive Nashville, TN 37211-3160 www.cumberlandhouse.com
