I agree, history is not taught in the schools as it really happened. I believe alot of it is "sugar coated". Maybe because so much of it is so controversial and even today can cause hard feelings. I remember my oldest son telling his 8th grade history teacher things about the civil war that the teacher did not know. (lol) Made for a really great parent/teacher conference that year.
Civil War Freak: I am interested to know your opinion of Book 3 of North and South. I believe it is supposed to follow John Jake's book a little more. BUT...personally I didn't like it. It did not have the same feel of Book 1 and Book 2. All of a sudden Ory has an older brother (where'd he come from?) and Bent was killed in Book 2..... but somehow is resurrected to once again be a villain in Book 3.... AND I just couldn't go along with George and Madalyn getting together at the end. It seemed disloyal to Ory and Constance. (sorry to ramble on....................)
a bit of a freak myself............................LOL
ssMarylyn: I read alot on the Andersonville story as well. Amazing that such things could happen. But I think most of the prisons were the same, especially toward the end of the war. Did you know that the commander of Andersonville, Henry Wirz was, I think, the only commander to stand trial and be hanged for the the things that happened at Andersonville?

I read, I think it was in one of Earl Hamner's blogs that David Harper, Jim Bob, reads and is interested in civil was history. Don't think I have ever seen The Blue and The Grey.

I've never seen them either Buck and I would like to read up on the war and prisoner of war camps. It's all over the Internet.

I was not impressed with it. I think that they tried to get back to vein of the books and not take so much liberty with the story telling The book(s) are a lot different then the miniseries. The miniseries is a love story with a civil war in it.

I liked the movie Andersonville www.imdb.com/title/tt0115097/There is one for the other side as well. Its not like the Yanks took such great care of their POW's either. I don't remember the name off of the top of my head, but I will think on it. Maybe it was more of a documentary then the movie link that I just gave.

I think the Union prison where Confederate soldiers were not mercifully treated was at Elmira,New York, though I might be wrong.

The north had POW camps as bad or worse than the Southern camps. Point Lookout, Maryland was one of these. From August, 1863, to June, 1865, Point Lookout, which was built to house 10,000 prisoners, held more than 50,000 men, including one of my relatives.

The movie or documentary that I am thinking of had a fence built more like a stockade. They type with the fence posts are set right next to each other and the tops have been sharpened to points to keep prisoners from climbing over.
If I remember correctly, the town knew bad things were happening in the prison , tried to get the army to do something about it and the person that was sent to investigate the prison just looked the other way.
Crud. I can't remember anymore.

"Keeping Up Appearances" is a British sitcom about a snobby, pretentious woman named Hyacinth Bucket (Bouquet as she pronounces it). Sheridan is her son whom she talks about incessantly. Sheridan might be a called a "Mama's Boy".
