My hometown movie theater had a free showing of "Spencer's Mountain" yesterday, which I went to. I have long been a fan of the Waltons but had never seen Spencer's Mountain. Nothing against the actors that were in that movie, but the parts of Clay Boy and Grandma and Grandpa in Spencer's Mountain were pretty bland compared to the talent of Richard Thomas, Ellen Corby, and Will Geer. Maureen O'Hara brings her red-headed spark to the character of Livy, but she looks like a movie star instead of a poor mountain wife who is raising 9 little kids! I prefer Michael Learned's more toned down character. Of course Henry Fonda is great in his role as always.

I feel the same way about Marueen O'Hara. She was a great actress, but I don't think she captured the role of Livy very well. Maybe she was just too sophisticated to portray such a down to earth role?
