I am watching the Pony Cart and Martha Corine is picking her flowers and having her heart attack with her gently smiling face lifted towards the heavens.
I love this part of the episode because death is shown as something not to fear.
Who do you think she is looking and smiling at, God, or her husband Henry?

Hmmm....interesting question .... My first thought is that she is looking to God to take her home.
I have never been able to watch this episode and not cry......it's just not possible for me. But it is one of my very favorites.

Actually, death is the beginning. I think maybe she is smiling at both?

I notice that also. Martha Corrine's face had a look of joy and peace, realizing she was moving into her Heavenly home. In the episode when Elizabeth's teacher and friend was dying with a brain tumor, the teacher called death "the next great adventure". In "The Empty Nest",the family looked like they knew Grandpa was happy now and in a much better place when they visited his grave. I think "The Waltons" made their belief in the afterlife abundantly clear.

In one of the episodes someone had died, maybe it was young Olivia's husband, and the family was standing in the kitchen talking about death and Grandma said that death was actually the beginning or something to that effect. According to the bible, she was right on!
