I watched this episode for the first time yesterday, and I really thought it was one of the most depressing episodes of all! All the Walton sons are out fighting in the war (with no mention of how Jim-Bob's doing), Ben especially seems pretty unhappy, Geoffrey and Selena and back living with their potentially violent father (though I never really liked the characters myself) Harley is taken away to serve a prison sentence he dosn't deserve, Verdie is left alone to raise her child, Elizabeth's horse Molly (who she had recently become very close with) gets a bad injury and Cindy has to put it out of her misery, Ep has to arrest John... When John went to see the president and the next thing we see is that the president had died, I really thought Harley was going to end up serving his sentence in the end! It was a very good opener in my opinion!

It's one of my favorites. Goodnight Mr. President.

Not one of my favorite episodes, that's for sure, but I thought Harley got off... a last minute pardon just before the president died?

My favorite part of the scene where everyone is at the table and the conversation between John Curtis and Grandpa was totally hilarious. The story line was totally made up and Ralph Waite did an amazing job to covering it up because John Curtis was talking about the new pant that he got from Pat which Patricia Norris is their series costume and wardrobe department.

Ben would be unhappy away from Cindy but he let his arrogance get the better of him in The Premonition.
