Alongside The Waltons, there is another big TV show that is my joint favourite: Doctor Who. This year, to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Doctor Who, they did a series called Tales of the TARDIS where they essentially repeat old episodes, but with about ten minutes of new footage showing characters from the classic episodes meeting up now, much older, catching up on their lives since then, and then reminiscing about an old episode (which you then watch) before adding a kind of sentimental epilogue for them afterwards.
Thinking about it, this would be the perfect way to celebrate The Waltons and reintroduce it to new fans, while also giving something to old fans. Imagine, for example, they did Tales of Walton's Mountain, and episode one was The Achievement. It starts with John-Boy and Olivia meeting to catch up on the anniversary of his first novel being published, Olivia talks about how that was and turning point for the whole family, and how all their lives started to change from then on, then afterwards talk about how their lives have changed past the end of A Walton Easter.
I'd love that, and I suspect fans would receive that more warmly than the two most recent movies (which, I have to admit, I am a fan of, and wouldn't like for them to be completely forgotten). If they made a Tales of Walton's Mountain series, which episodes would you have them revisit? And which surviving actors would you have to reprise their roles for the framing device? I feel like the team behind Tales of the TARDIS have come up with a perfect formula for paying tribute to the past, while also finding a way to make it relevant and "new".
