I have very fond memories of watching the movie Homeward Bound as a young child, though I only ever saw it once and only really retained fragments. Recently, as an adult, I had the chance to rewatch it for the first time (thanks to Disney Plus) and also to watch its sequel Homeward Bound 2: Lost in San Francisco. For those who don't know, these are two movies about two dogs and a cat who get separated from their family and then, in the first movie, have to travel across the countryside to return to get home, and in the second, have to survive on the streets of San Francisco. I think anyone who has a dog or a cat will get a lot out of these films, and I loved rewatching them (even if, in my childhood memories, the animals' mouths moved as they spoke, rather than just being dubbed over as they actually are). Anyway, one of the two dogs is an old Golden Retriever and the more authoritative and sensible of the animals. His name is Shadow and in the first move he is voiced by Don Ameche. Sadly, he died shortly after the first film, so Shadow was recast for the second movie, where he was then voiced (to my delight) by Ralph Waite. It really made me appreciate how warm and welcoming his voice became as he got older and I don't think he'd be quite as good in this role if he'd done it in his younger years. Either way, he was great in it, and his performance is a nice little treat for us Waltons fans. If you're looking for a couple of wholesome movies to watch, I strongly recommend both of these, and not just because of the Waltons connection

They are two of my favorite movies, but I haven’t watched them for many years. Yes, I knew Ralph Waite was the voice of the older dog, Shadow, in the sequel movie. Also, I believe the voice of the other dog was Michael J. Fox, and the voice of the cat was Sally Field.

Fox does a lot of voice work since his diagnosis of Parkinson disease.
