OR were the waltons just the 1st to settle the biggest part of the mountain and then all those neighbors like the baldwins who moved later agreed to to call the town town "waltons mountain"?
and im not even getting into how much jb owned with his meadow

I'm guessing that the people that Nurse Nora and later Mary Ellen visited owned their own property on the mountain. People like Ronie Cotter.

If I can remember right Grandpa once said that the Waltons laid claim to the mountain. Which means that it was part of the land act where you could register land and call it yours. But exactly how much he claimed was never stated. A section of it was probably claimed by them and the rest they just called theirs because they were the first ones there. People usually accepted that back then.
Example would be the town I was born and raise in. Prineville. Barney Prine was the first one there to settle. Others followed. But they called it Prine's Ville (and then eventually Prineville) because he was the first one there.
