I just watched the Season 1 episode 'The Courtship' and, during the 'goodnight' sequence at the end, Ben is talking to John-Boy about marriage and pretty much says that its a very bad idea to go straight into a marriage without intimately knowing your spouce first... Something I think is pretty darn funny in hindsight

I just finished season 1 for the 6th or 7th time and I don't recall that. Refresh my memory a little more here....

It goes like this.
Ben: John-Boy, what happens if you get married to a girl and find out you don't like her? John-Boy: Better make sure you love her before you get married, Ben. Ben: Yeah but maybe there's things you might not know about her, that maybe she sleeps with her Teddy Bear or snores or wears socks to bed. John-Boy: If you really love her you'll put up with such things, Ben. Ben: Yuck. John-Boy: Goodnight, Ben. Ben: Goodnight, John-Boy.

I guess I don't see that as Ben suggesting you get to know someone on an intimate basis before marriage. I think John Boy is just saying that you have to love someone enough to put up with their little odd ways, in order to marry them and be with them forever. I wonder too, if Ben was even old enough at that time to have sex on his mind?

I suppose so. But he says "John-Boy, what happens if you get married to a girl and find out you don't like her?" and pretty much that exact senario plays out in 'The Outsider' when he gets married and starts to get annoyed by little quirks and by things he didn't expect in Cindy's personality.

And she took the broom to him and got the kink of his tail real fast too, thanks to Grandma. Ben needed a huge attitude adjustment.

The look on Grandma's face when she said, "Old fool....YOUNG fool..." was priceless!
