People here for the most part say Warshinhton instead of Washington Pa. I've always said Washington. I've heard that pronunciation in Indiana too. They warsh their deeshes (dishes with long e sound on i) I suspect this long e for i comes from the French influence on the local accent. (Remember it was French territory along the Mississippi from Louisiana up into Canada). In French there is a long e in words like exquisite (exquiseet) and olive (oleeve), executive (executeeve). With that in mind I've heard locals say, I'm going feeshing (fish).

I must apologize- Johnny was right to call me out on the correct spelling of Worcester,MA. I have 2 reasons why I think I spelled it that way: 1. I was posting around 4am and my brain was tired and 2. When anyone asked my Mom where she was born, she always said in a full Boston accent: “Wooster, Mass” - emphasizing it like “woos-sta”. Her pronunciation was playing in my head so I wrote what I remember hearing throughout my life! I knew there was an “r” in the word, so I just stuck it in there. But, I am QUITE impressed with Johnny’s knowledge of the many geographical accents throughout New England!

It just reminded me how English words evolve as they are used further away from their place of origin Thanks for appreciating my awareness of regional accents. I think because of my musical ear, I am more tuned into hearing subtle differences in speech.

Growing up and even today I call the even meal Supper. My mama, now thinking back on her southern accent kind of called it "Suppah". Not exactly in the same way Olivia did, but as I recall being called to for meals by mama it did sound like "Suppah".

[quote author=" flossieskid" source="/post/144374/thread" timestamp="1676551131" I have spoken about the actress Jeanette Nolan (who also was in the Waltons) and I think I mentioned she and her family were often snowed in, on their ranch in Montana, from October through April. So she would have to homeschool her 2 children. She would have them “choose” which “teacher” they wanted that day to teach their classes. i.e. the quiet Swedish teacher or the loud, boisterous German fraulin, the excitable Irish or Scottish schoolmarm or the French mademoiselle to name a few. Their choices were endless because Jen could do SO many accents. Jen would teach the entire day using only the accent her kids picked for all their lessons that day. Maybe some of the parents who had to home school their kids during Covid resorted to the same tactic to keep their children engaged with their own learning. I have home schooled our son for a semester when he was in middle school. It sure ain’t easy! [/quote] Wow!! I would have loved to have been homeschooled by Jeanette Nolan!! 🥰

Accents are weird. I am from Virginia and do not really consider myself or my family or friends to have any accent at all. I however, as I travel to the southern part of the State here is a bit more of a southern draw. Over this past year, I took a gap year from my studies being graduating high school in 2022 and going to University which I will in the Fall of 2023. I used this time to travel to many places around the world including France, Italy, Australia, New Zealand. Sweden, Greece, and Hawaii. There I hear quite the distinct accents.
I have always called my meal times breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
