I would have thought the ones that would have had the strongest accents would have been Grandpa and Grandpa and others like Maude Gormley who must have been around the mountain quite a long time as she was pretty old. I could really never judge how old the Baldwin Sisters were. They had a more sophisticated accent, but not to the degree of Cora Beth. Probably bc they went to finishing school as young ladies of means did back then. Kind of like what Aimee Godsey went to.

I guess "Suppah" was just for Olivia. Or maybe it was a way the Southern accent was and how they say Supper. Olivia though seems like the only one that says it that way. Not even Grandma. dropping the R pronunciation in words ending in r, in linguistics is called non-rhotic speech. It was brought over from England with the original colonists. You hear non-rhotic accents around New England and New York. it was also common along the Atlantic seaboard states & south into the 1800s, including Virginia were the Hamners lived. In YT clips you can hear former President Carter (from Georgia) using a non-rhotic accent, in words like former (formah), discover (discovah), together (togethah), deeper (deepah) and ever (evah). Besides the U.S., I've heard non-rhotic accents from people in the U.K. Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. For the older actors like Zeb, Esther, Maude & the Baldwin sisters, I think they were happy they could remember all their lines. Getting them all to speak with an authentic Virginia accent would have been more challenging. Yeah, New Englanders and New Yorkers have strong accents.

Yeah, New Englanders and New Yorkers have strong accents. We all have distinctive accents, it depends on the listener's perspective.

In the episode where Olivia is working at the dress shop, the family is wondering where she is eating her midday meal. And Grandma says, “I suppose they call it lunch.”

We call it dinner. When I feed our cats and dogs, I'll say " din-din is ready " I also say it to our hens, rooster, cows, horses...... I didn't realize you had horses, too? Do you ride? What kind of horses do you have?

(No mockery. Spoken by a Bostonian as an example on 'This Old House'.)

Molly, with all of those animals, I guess you have a lot of chores like the Waltons kids did with the cow and chickens and horse? Do you have to wake up really early in the morning on school days, like before school and get your morning chores done like the Walton kids have to and then go off to school?

I also remember when Olivia would get a little upset with John Boy and call him John Walton Junyah.

But during the school year on school days my parents handle the morning chores. My parents state my primary job is that of student and school comes first. Besides farm/ ranch chores my mum is teaching me accounting. Our family own rental property in several counties and along with ranch mum uses M.B.A to good use. I'm taking accounting in high school also and thanks to mum it's my easiest class.

Even though I don't have those types of chores, I still have chores to do around the house but my mom says the same thing to me that school comes first. Even when I do dance that does not come before school. I have always got good grades and I want to keep that up. I think your mom teaching you accounting will help you out a lot with things in your families business. That is so cool. By the way I sent you that message before I saw your reply.

That's the accent I find most grating with NY metro area accents a close second (even though I grew up there).
