We also rode bikes without helmets. We get into trouble if we do that now.

We get into trouble if we do that now. Lol, I still ride my bicycle and motorcycle without a helmet. Now that I'm older the little voice inside my head tells me to put the helmet on. But I still resist

My Mom got her Drivers License in the late 30s/early 40s. There was no testing then. She didn’t even have to be at the office to pick it up. My Grandfather got it for her. This was in Louisiana.

So they just trusted her that she could drive without even seeing that she could? I guess her parents(your grandparents) taught her. That is crazy though.

I've been riding for 32 years so my one year probationary period was over long ago, lol. Sometimes I wish Ohio had a helmet law because then I would have to wear a helmet. I do wear a helmet if going on the highway or if it is raining. For bicycles, I think only 18 and under must wear a helmet.

I would think if someone was riding a motorcycle and wasn't wearing a helmet and got into an accident it would be a pretty bad outcome for them. Even with a helmet it wouldn't be much fun.

You must remember that it was a different time back then. There weren't as many cars on the road, and they didn't go very fast. People didn't drive around the block to buy a loaf of bread. And they didn't commute 2 hours to get to work.

Now people do food shopping for like 2 weeks at a time and there is no way they are carrying that many groceries home from the store. Plus most people didn't have a refrigerator to store food in. I remember when Jim Bob traded the Juke Box for a larger sized refrigerator for the kitchen and that wasn't until a much later season.

By the 1940's every state had a law requiring a person to be 16 to get a driver's license.

My dad learned to drive on a farm tractor. He drove all around the farm and up and down the driveway. One day after my dad turned 16 my grandfather said "You're ready" and took dad to the DMV to take the test and get his license. This would have been in 1958 or 59. I don't think my dad had ever been behind the wheel of a car before that.

If your Dad was able to back farm implements on the tractor into the barn and into a tight space, he had more experience than most drivers taking the driving test.

So back then they didn't have a written test before you took the actual driving test?

So back then they didn't have a written test before you took the actual driving test? They had both. You did it all on the same day. You took the written test and it was written on paper not on a computer like now and if you passed it you took the road test.

You took the written test and it was written on paper not on a computer like now and if you passed it you took the road test. I think that is a better way to do it. Everything that is learned is in your head right then and there and you get it over with all in one day.
