They had both. You did it all on the same day. You took the written test and it was written on paper not on a computer like now and if you passed it you took the road test. I think that is a better way to do it. Everything that is learned is in your head right then and there and you get it over with all in one day. I might be wrong but I don't think they had learners permits back then either.

I think they have all sorts of requirements now like you have to have a certain amount of hours you have to learn behind the wheel before you can even take the driving test.
