Hello everyone. I was wondering the other day whether the Waltons retained its time slot throughtout its 9-year run. I was pretty sure it did but wasn't sure, since I didn't watch it regularly when I was a kid. That is a pretty good sign about a show's success -- that it keeps a solid timeslot throughout a long run, no matter what its competition, etc. Other long-time shows like MASH, Seinfeld, ER, and Cheers had the same thing. Any thoughts? Thanks!

I remembered sitting in the living room with my family watching "The Waltons" on Thursday night.

"The Waltons" was shown in the same time slot during its entire run.

Thanks for the info, all. I think that is really impressive, that it was able to maintain what I think is a very competitive time slot for nine years (that's just my hunch -- it seems that many of the most popular network shows are still on Thursday nights).
On the other hand, think about how many fewer entertainment options there were in the 1970s -- no internet, no facebook, no cell phones, no satellite, and not even cable! The web was something you cleaned out from the corners of your porch. From what I recall, there were only the three main networks on TV, and maybe PBS plus Fox at some point. So a prime-time show was a pretty big deal, with a lot more eyeballs on every episode. Still, amazing to me that they were able to keep up the show for all that time. Does anybody know what the ratings were like in later seasons?

Does anybody know what the ratings were like in later seasons? Accordingto Wikipedia The Walton's ratings were: 1972–1973: #20 1973–1974: #2 1974–1975: #8 1975–1976: #14 1976–1977: #15 1977–1978: #21

I'm actually surprised to find that it was on at 7pm. I thought it may have been a little later. Here in Australia I think it aired at 7.30 for some time, and may have been a Thursday night too, or perhaps a Friday. I remember often missing it because I worked late on a Friday night. A bit later on it moved to 5pm on a Sunday, which wasn't a bad time for it either. When it went into reruns it aired at around 2pm every afternoon.

I grew up in Reno and in the 60's we only had two channels 4 and 8 and when we got a new channel 2 I remember my brother saying with 3 channels we will always have something to watch. Also remember that it was before VCR so if you couldn't watch when it was on you missed it.

I remember it was always Thursday night @ 8:00 p.m. in Eastern USA. Very good TV back in those days. Today it's not worth turning the TV on unless you are popping in a DVD....

Exactly why I love old radio shows, TV reruns from the '50s,'60s, and '70s, and old movies. The only shows made the past 20 years I watch are "Seinfeld" and "Frasier". Even then, I am careful about what episodes I watch because of the story lines.

Indiana is a problem state because you sometimes do not know what time zone you are in. My friend who I have mentioned before lived from 1971-1983 in the north-central part of the state and the TV stations came from Fort Wayne and South Bend. This meant that even though they had a choice of several channels because of their location it was in the Eastern time zone and on school nights they had to start their bedtime at 7;45PM ,whereas the Waltons did not come on until 8PM.
