Happy Labor Day to all the Forum participants! It’s hard to believe another summer is done! I guess life is getting back to normal after Covid and I hope everyone is healthy and happy!
I am perhaps at a disadvantage (not having seen all of the Waltons episodes yet from the years after my Mom died), but I don’t remember the Waltons having any other holiday celebrations shown in an episode besides Thanksgiving. Even with the depression years and money being tight, didn’t most rural communities, no matter how small, have special celebrations, such as: County Fairs, Bizzares or picnics to celebrate the Fourth of July, Saint Patrick‘s Day, Labor Day (maybe that wasn’t a holiday yet) or Halloween, Christmas, New Year’s or any others like that?
I know there were a great number of cast members and it might have been hard to include specific holidays in the 1 to 3 storylines each episode, along with character driven plots. But, I spoke to two of the screenwriters/producers and they said the backdrop to those type of celebrations are always good storylines because you can usually very easily “plug-in” any cast member or other guest star and build a plausible and entertaining story from there.
I remember in the episode “The Firestorm”, Erin was competing in a beauty contest that she thought she lost because of John Boy’s articles on Hitler in the town paper. But, that was the only community get together that I remember seeing. I would love to hear from the other Forum members if they can recollect other celebrations, besides Thanksgiving, that ended up as an important plot line in an episode.
I look forward to anyone’s memory being better than mine. But, trust me, I have set the bar VERY low!!

There were several Christmas episodes beginning with the original movie, The Homecoming.
Other Christmas episodes:
The Best Christmas - Season 5 The Children’s Carol - Season 6 The Spirit - Season 8
Even “Day of Infamy” ( Season 7) could be considered a Christmas episode.
The Season 7 episode, Founders Day, was a celebration of the first inhabitants of their community.
For some reason, I keep thinking there was a Valentines Day reference in an episode, but maybe I dreamed it. I seem to remember Elizabeth making homemade Valentines. Does anyone else remember this, or am I just imagining it?

And runs into criticism from bigots in the community. The county fair where Olivia's old beau (played by Michael Learned's ex husband). Where Olivia's cake had whiskey frosting, Grandma's quilt didn't get first place and the Baldwin ladies won a ribbon for their intoxicating preserves.

Yes, it was “ The Festival” in Season 6. I think they called it a Spring Festival. It was “The Prize” in Season 2. There was a community church picnic in “The Triangle” Season 2. John Boy competed against Rev. Fordwick in a spike-driving contest. There was an Honor Day to honor war veterans in “The Hero” Season 5. They found out that Sheriff Bridges had been a hero in the war, and Ben built a bench to honor his Uncle Ben and the others in the community who had died in the war.

The fund raising church event where JohnBoy brought home the sixteen year old genius Lyle who was already in college. Grandma made fudge to sell for the fund raising. Erin and her brothers put on a play about Joan of Arc. Lyle had to step in and play one of the parts when Jason took off.

Also when Olivia got sick with Polio it was around Easter And the title of that episode is “An Easter Story.” The final Waltons TV movie was also an easter story titled “A Walton Easter”. They also had a TV movie centered around Mother’s Day.

In one of the 1980's reunion movies Elizabeth was making a Valentine's box for school. John Curtis ended up ruining it when he pulled Ginny around the yard in it.
While not a national holiday The Waltons did have Founders Day.

Thank you to so many people who listed the names of several Walton episodes that celebrate holidays. I had absolutely no idea there were that many- even Easter! That one is a shocker. Again, I appreciate all the input. Now comes the fun of finding those episodes on my DVD’s and watching every single one!
