^ Have you ever stood up fast and suddenly and your brain starts to 'swim' and you feel a bit disoriented and dizzy? Think of that sensation going on for hours. That's what alcohol makes you feel like. Unfortunately, as good as it makes you feel, it can also make you feel just as bad after the effects wear off.
I used to drink. Since 1994, I haven't even had so much as a chocolate-covered cherry. (I also quit smoking in 2006.)

I don't recall Ben or Jim Bob drinking the recipe either. Didn't Ben and some of guys drink something when they met at Ike's while Cindy's baby shower was going on? I don't think Jim Bob did because at this point he was not graduated from school yet. And since they had Jeffrey with them, they gave him a soda. Something alcholic I mean. I know Jason drank the recipe. With Boone when they went to the Baldwins and Boone helped reconstruct the Recipe.

^ The recipe is pure moonshine whiskey. At your age, even a sip would burn all the way down. Your lips would probably purse and you would suck in a breath through your mouth to cool your throat. Your eyes would probably water and then you would probably smile stupidly. But that's not why people drink it. It is the after effects they are looking for. Those are what make drinkers become alcoholics. It makes them want to live a life in after effects so they don't have to face reality.
Don't give in to that temptation. It's not worth it.
Thank you for your insight and advice. I'm not planning on giving in to temptation. I was being honest to what the appeal to drinking. I know adults who have an occasional wine or champagne or beer and far as I know they are not alcoholics. It's just human nature to be curious about some stuff Growing up, I watched my parents use alcohol responsibly. We are Irish Catholic. Drinking is a part of our culture. 😊 I would drink when I went out with friends, but never more than a drink or two. I never wanted to drink to the point of not knowing what was going on around me or to where I didn't feel well. I don't care for beer. When I'm in Ireland, I will have the occasional Guinness, but only when I'm in Ireland because it doesn't taste right anywhere else. Mostly I like wine. Occasionally I'll have wine with dinner. Not very often, because I'm always worried it will make me feel tired and I always have something to do, like go out and feed the horses or feed the dogs. I also enjoy vodka in all kinds of concoctions of various fruit juices, but again, I don't indulge very often because I'm always trying to stay awake to get things done. When I was young and went out all night on Fridays and Saturdays with my friends to the local dance club, I drank Coke all night. Yes, Coke. Because we literally closed the club down at 4 a.m. and all I wanted to do was dance the entire night. I would never have had that energy if I was drinking alcohol.

But it's not an all or nothing proposition. I certainly don't feel that way after a drink or two. And I'm not much of a drinker.

Here is Hawthorn pouring the recipe And here is John Boy holding the cup but we never actually see him drink from the cup so maybe he didn't drink it then after all .

John-Boy's attitude to alcohol changes as the series goes on. While he still lives at home, he rarely drinks it. I remember in The Inferno, he is repeatedly offered a drink by a guy he's with when reporting on the Hindenberg, but turns him down each time. This seems to be out of respect for Olivia and Esther though, because once he moves out he seemed to drink much more freely. I think in The Return he says to Jason "Does your mama let you drink this stuff yet?" as he enjoys a drink in the Dew Drop Inn.
JessicaGirlSpy, I can see why somebody would be curious when something is absolutely forbidden to them. It's not something my parents were ever strict about, and consequently, I have never been interested in it. I've tasted it once or twice, but I rarely, if ever, drink it, because I just don't get the appeal. (no shame to anyone else he enjoys a drink though)

Even as a teenager I had friends who drank but I never saw the point of sitting in the woods or in the basement with friends drinking yourself into oblivion then having no memory of it the next day. As an adult watching my husband spiral out of control before he got treatment for his alcoholism. I have seen what damage it can do to relationships and jobs and just about every aspect of not just the alcoholic's life but those around them. It's called the family disease for a reason. It nearly ruined our marriage. I know that not everyone who drinks is an alcoholic and they drink responsibly and can stop at one or two drinks and if they want to enjoy a drink now and again that is fine but with what I have been through I just as soon not drink at all. My husband has been sober for just over 5 years now.

I exaggerated my curiosity about alcohol and its appeal and addictive grip it has on some people. I do think of people like Dylan Thomas, F Scott Fitzgerald and Edgar Allan Poe and their struggles with alcohol. And on tv show like MASH where Hawkeye and BJ had a still and everyone but Radar seem to drink ( would he share his grape nehi?) Or on the Andy Griffith Show Otis almost always was drunk.
And I hear about about people buying expensive bottles of wine or champagne. Just give me a nice glass of sweet tea/ ice tea with lemon and perhaps a bag of caramel popcorn and I'll be content!😃

Save yourself heartache and trouble, dont touch alcohol. I've never had it myself, but too many people in my family have become alcoholics. It taught me we can't handle the stuff.

Hi All. Been out of sight last month or so. Just wanna say I enjoy seeing your posts.
Yes alcohol can be debilitating. I have family members who are wonderful people and yet drink themselves senseless every night. But I always saw the Recipe as something special and inviting about Walton’s mountain. It wasn’t just moonshine which can be nasty. It was a unique little secret for Waltons Mountain and the baldwins could only create this nectar on the mountain.
