I was watching The Quilting and started to think I don't think John Boy ever had any of the recipe. In fact I don't think he ever had a drink does anyone remember if he did?

He had a swig of Cousin Boone’s moonshine in The Conflict, and Olivia was horrified. I can remember him drinking at the Dew Drop Inn at least once, too, but I don’t remember the episode. I can’t remember a scene where he was drinking the Baldwin ladies’ recipe though.

I remember him drinking at the Dew Drop too, but that was during the John Boy II years. Wasn’t there an episode where the boys were at home - after Livvie and Grandma had left and maybe even John - where they were drinking the recipe in John Boy’s bedroom? I think they even joked a bit how their mother and grandmother would NOT have approved.

I'm not 100% sure about this one. When the Baldwin ladies sent Jason a jar of the recipe when he was in the army for his birthday, didn't he meet up with JohnBoy and they shared a drink? This was the second JohnBoy, but still...

Wasn't there an episode where he went to find John after his dad left home to work. He found him at a local company bar and had a drink with him before a fight broke out around them. They threw a few punches and then bailed.

Yes. Season 3 - “The Departure” That was the episode I was trying to think of. The rooming house with Stavros. I thought that was a great moment with John and son fighting side by side briefly.

I don't recall Ben or Jim Bob drinking the recipe either.

I just saw him drink some recipe in season 4, “The Boondoggle.” John Boy was showing a reporter around; they visited the Baldwin Sisters, and they offered them some recipe. John Boy accepted and drank some, but he did seem a bit hesitant.

John Boy having a supply of the recipe on hand would come in handy if F Scott Fitzgerald and Zelda Fitzgerald, or Ernest Hemingway or William Faulkner or Dylan Thomas stopped for a visit while John Boy lived in New York City
I'll be honest---- my mum and dad are like Olivia and Esther- strong anti- alcohol stance. Yet I'm curious about it what is it about alcohol that so many people like? What would it be like to have a glass of the recipe. I would never tell my parents this I doubt they would understand just a lecture on as long I'm under their roof and their responsible for my medical Bill's I have to obey their rules.

^ The recipe is pure moonshine whiskey. At your age, even a sip would burn all the way down. Your lips would probably purse and you would suck in a breath through your mouth to cool your throat. Your eyes would probably water and then you would probably smile stupidly. But that's not why people drink it. It is the after effects they are looking for. Those are what make drinkers become alcoholics. It makes them want to live a life in after effects so they don't have to face reality.
Don't give in to that temptation. It's not worth it.

Thank you for your insight and advice. I'm not planning on giving in to temptation. I was being honest to what the appeal to drinking. I know adults who have an occasional wine or champagne or beer and far as I know they are not alcoholics. It's just human nature to be curious about some stuff
