Super sad news: just heard today, from her son, that Claire Whitaker died. While tests showed no significant injury to her brain, after her fall, or to any other part of her body, evidently there was an undetected problem that caused her death 3 weeks after she came home. The doctor said it was “brain trauma from which she would not recover”. So, they were able to take her home and she enjoyed a beautiful sunset at her home in Sante Fe, the night before she died peacefully surrounded by her children.
Her family grieves, of course, but are happy she lived 93 years and had a loving marriage, an amazing career as a writer, Executive Story Editor and finally Executive Producer on The Waltons. All her children were successful and had joyful marriages, but she was not immune from great sadness. Claire suffered every parent’s nightmare of losing her eldest son, Ernie Wallengren, to ALS when he was only 50.
A wonderful career, a loving 2nd marriage, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren plus 93 years on this earth - reminds me of a quote from Dr.Suess: “Don’t cry because it’s over - smile because it happened.” So, today, I am smiling through my tears!

How very sad. At her age, I'm sure she would have had an MRI, perhaps even a full-body scan, but at least a scan of her brain. One would think that a tumour would have been detectable. Perhaps they did detect it and it was decided not to tell her in order for her to live out the rest of her life without the fear and worry. At least that's what I like to think.

A tumor probably would have been detectable but a blood clot may not be. She could have developed a blood clot from hitting her head. Even a blood clot small enough to fit on the head of a pin can cause major damage even death it not detected so I've been told by the doctors who treated my husband when he had blood clots..

I was sad to hear this news. I'm so sorry for your loss, Tracey, and certainly for Claire's family. 93 is a wonderful age to reach, but of course when we love someone, it's never enough. Rest in peace, Claire. 🕊️🌹♥️
