I happened to be watching a rerun of the Waltons episode where Olivia and Mary Ellen were driving around to bring some medical aid to the neighbors. They meet up with a young girl whose husband is in the army. She ends up telling them that she was sexually assaulted by a older boy and she confides in Olivia and M.E. that she was raped.
I loved Olivia’s speech about the legal process which seems to put the victim on trial. Liv indicating to the sheriff that there is no justice for young women who want to report abuse. It was a great commentary on how inappropriately sexual assault cases were handled then and sadly a lot still carries on today.
But, my reason for writing this thread is to express my utter shock and amazement because I had NEVER, EVER seen Olivia in black slacks before this episode! She wore them for a significant amount of time. It just seems out of place, but I was thrilled that Olivia was moving ahead with the times and accepting women in all kinds of dress is admirable!
Does anyone else remember any other episodes where Olivia was wearing pants?? I’ve seen the girls wear them periodically, but never Olivia. I wonder if Michael Learned had to fight to wear slacks like Mary Tyler Moore did in “The Dick Van Dyke Show”. The producers finally allowed her to wear capris in one scene a week. The standards and practices censor decided the pants were too revealing as the back part of the slacks seemed to “cup her backside”. Good Lord - how times have changed!!

There was at least one episode where Olivia wore overalls. In The Celebration, Season 6, Episode 13, Olivia helped John fulfill a big lumber contract so they could pay off the mortgage. She wears overalls while helping out. When we first see her in the overalls, Jim Bob looks at her funny and she asks him if something is wrong. He mentions she's wearing pants and she responds "You don't think I'm gonna haul fence posts in a house dress, do ya?" Then while driving John's truck she comes across Corabeth walking down the road. Corabeth asked Olivia if that was her in male attire. They go to Rev. Buchanan's place to measure for new curtains. Rev. Buchanan jokes about her looking like a man. He yells back at Olivia, saying, "Excuse me sir, didn't you used to be Mrs. John Walton". Olivia tells him to watch his step if wants those new curtains. Attachment DeletedAttachment Deleted

Didn't Olivia wear pants in The Minstrel in the first season? I doubt if she would have been picking apples in a dress or skirt.

^ Just checked that episode. There were two scenes with Olivia picking apples. She was wearing a dress both times. Also looks like she was wearing socks? Attachment DeletedAttachment Deleted

^ So, not climbing ladders for Livvy.
Thanks for the effort. I don't have the first 3 seasons on DVD, which is why I've never seen the Easter episode.

Lol, no she was on the ground in both scenes. It wasn't much effort to find those scenes. I cut the cord last year so don't have cable but subscribed to a streaming service called Fubo. They have live tv as well many "cable" channels. The package I have comes with 500 hours of storage. I have all The Waltons episodes and movies saved. I always wanted to buy the DVD set, but now don't need to since I have them all saved through Fubo. I can either watch on my TV or on my desktop computer. On the computer, it is super easy to go to the episode and find a particular scene. Ah, I love technology when it works like it is supposed to. Which is only some of the time

Not slacks, but she did wear this outfit when she and John went to the beach. John bought it for her, and he called it “leisure-wear” when he asked the saleslady to help him find something. It is a feminine outfit, though, unlike the black slacks and overalls she wore in those other episodes, and it’s appropriate for wearing at the beach, but it is the most revealing outfit I remember Olivia ever wearing.

This is what I refer to as the “Michael Learned is Over The Waltons” period. She had returned at the beginning of season 8 presumably to fulfill some contractual obligation before leaving permanently. And she wasn’t going to be stuck in a dress pouring coffee. She’s also noticeably low energy in some of those episodes.

Well, she was on vacation far away from Walton's mountain. That would make a difference in choice of attire.

That was one of the rare time we got to see Olivia's full on legs. Of course, they're at the beach and all but still it's so drastic from all of her house dresses
