Easton, I happened to be browsing your recent threads and noticed your comment about Tom Hanks being the only actor who won consecutive Oscars. I couldn’t see if anyone had responded to you yet.
Spencer Tracy was the first actor who accomplished consecutive Oscar wins several decades before Mr. Hanks. Spencer won his first Academy Award in 1937 for “Captain Courageous” ( keep the tissues handy if you watch that film!) and the following year, 1938, he won his second Oscar for the lead in “Boy’s Town” - another tear jerker! Spencer Tracy and Laurence Olivier tied for the record of 9 Academy Award nominations throughout their careers.
Sadly, no woman has achieved back to back Oscars. Hopefully, fingers crossed, that will change sometime soon!

About the only thing I know about Captain Courageous is that it's one of the movies we know that the Walton kids watched. And that it was based on a Kipling novel ( I have never read anything by Kipling and I know basically nothing about him)
The Only Spencer Tracy movie I ever seen was It's A Mad Mad World. I hated it, I walked out of the family room before it was half over. My dad loves the movie, and he kept pointing out the famous actresses and actors in it.( some I never heard of) I do think Spencer is a kinda cool name. A good name for a cat or a dog.

In my defence I wrote "that I can think of". I could have cheated and Googled it and impressed everyone how smart I am when I'm really not.
Still, I'm not surprised about Tracy. There aren't many actors of his calibre who have come along to take his place. (I loved his role in 'It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World'. Now there's a cornucopia of sight gags and cameos, although they could have done with a whole lot less of Dick Shawn. When he was on the screen there was enough ham that he could have catered a 500-guest wedding reception.)
PS - I just Googled it. Tom and Spencer are the only two actors to win consecutive Best Actor Oscars; Tom for Philadelphia and Forrest Gump. Louise Rainer (The Great Ziegfeld, 1936, & The Good Earth, 1937) and Katherine Hepburn (Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?, 1967, & The Lion in Winter, 1968) are the only 2 females. I've never heard of Louise Rainer.

Easton - I stand corrected! Completely forgot about Louise Rainer and Katharine Hepburn winning back to back Oscars! Louise Rainer was a terrific actress - very pretty - looking like a cross between Loretta Young and Linda Darnell. You may have to look them up. But, it seems after her second Academy Award, she rarely made more movies, or none that I saw. Honestly, her name did cross my mind when thinking about multiple winners, but I thought she won her Oscars close together in years. I just did not remember she, too, won the Academy Award back to back. I think both her wins were in the 1930’s, so many people today have never heard anything about her.
I should have Googled female winners or checked it out in my 2” thick book I was given by my husband, called “Oscars”. It has ALL the info anyone would need about the awards. I think I forgot about Katharine Hepburn because she tied with Barbra Streisand for the Academy Award, in 1968, I think. Barbara won for “Funny Girl” and I remember they each got over 3,000 plus votes. Whatever the total, it was an exact tie. It was the first, and only time, so far, anyone tied for the Oscars - in any category., I think - but I may be wrong.
I probably shouldn’t admit this, but my Dad was a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and voted every year for the winners of the Oscars. He didn’t like to watch all the eligible candidates because first - he didn’t own a VCR machine and 2nd - it was VERY time consuming! Studios would send a VCR tape to members to view potential candidates for all the Oscar categories.
But, if I remember correctly, initially, each guild would vote for people in their category - so technical awards would be voted on by their peers (i.e. editors would vote for editors, sound awards by only sound members, directors by directors, actors by actors, etc.) Then, once the 5 candidates would be listed on the final ballot, those ballots are then sent to the entire general membership of the Academy and their votes decide who wins and those winners are announced on the television broadcast.
But, since we had a VCR machine, many times my Dad would come to our house to view the tapes. But, often he just wasn’t up for it. So, I would look at all the tapes (sometimes he got 20+ tapes in a few month’s time) Heck, I should have started my own Blockbuster VCR rental library - DRAT!! Never thought of that!
But, for the categories my Dad didn’t see, I would view them (along with our daughter, Nikki when she was in her late teens) and then discuss the choices with my Dad, and, together, we would fill out his ballot when he was stumped as to who he should vote for. After careful evaluation and much discussion, we would mark the final ballot and, then, submit it to the Academy. But, we always discussed every choicebwith my Dad, so it didn’t seem improper.
Although, when Nikki started doing movie reviews on her radio station, KFI, one time she managed to mention my Dad’s membership in the Academy and then said she would fill out part of his ballot and I would fill out the remainder. Her explanation did NOT include my father in any capacity! Somehow, when I heard it on the radio, with Nikki alluding to our involvement only, it did sound a bit sketchy on our part. But, she neglected to mention that we ALWAYS discussed the choices with my Dad, so at least he would “know how he voted!”
