The only hand-me-down that I can think of for the boys was the episode in which Jim-Bob wore one of his sister's blouse. (Didn't he?) The boys, except for John-Boy, should have grown into a brother's pants and shirts. I had 4 older brothers. Hand-me-downs were very common. I was in my third year of high school before I got my very first brand-new pair of pants. They were beige, wide-wale corduroys.
Not too many hand-me-downs after that. My brothers had all left home and I turned out to be taller than the other four.

Yeah, I've noticed none of the boys ever wore each other's shirts throughout the series. I suppose it's due to their size differences? I also don't think I ever saw Elizabeth wearing any of her sister's dresses either.

^ Having worn hand-me-downs until high school, trust me. Size wasn't much of an issue. Like Olivia, my mother had a sewing machine.

I'm guessing the boys with doing the heavy chores, helping in the mill etc..wore their clothes out before they could be passed down. Erin probably got most of the girls hand me downs. She would have gotten Mary Ellens clothes and likely wore them out before Elizabeth grew in to them. I seem to remember an episode where one of Mary Ellen's dresses was being made over for Elizabeth. Elizabeth was a teenager by then. I can't remember the episode though

Judy's newest 'Behind The Scenes' video featured Season 1's 'The Reunion'. At the beginning of the episode, Mary Ellen got into a fight after school defending Jim-Bob wearing girls' clothing. I thought it was a blouse but it was actually the top half of Erin's skirt. The bottom of the skirt had been stained and Olivia made the top into a shirt with a very 'girly' collar.

Mary Ellen was making it for Elizabeth bc she felt like her dating life was over. I could be wrong.
