Did the show ever use canned laughter or any other generic recorded sound?
I don't think they did, but I may have heard the audio so many times that I tuned it out if they did include it.

I don’t think there was any canned laughter, but there was background music.

The laugh track was almost universal for comedy series, but using it on a dramatic show would be subversive!

No reason to use canned laughter in a show about a poor family living through the depression. Unless it was a Monty Python movie.

So what you are saying is that the Walton's never laughed...hard and long. Belly laughing.

Well, (at least) not on Sunday! Olivia, Grandma and Fordwick would have been aghast.

When something is truly funny, there is no need for laughter in a can to tell you to laugh. You just do it naturally.

So what you are saying is that the Walton's never laughed...hard and long. Belly laughing. Of course they laughed. They laughed a lot in the show. The actors provided the laughter themselves. They didn't need to add canned laughter.

They didn't need to add canned laughter. So you are saying that they laughed to tears? I do not remember that. Do you have a scene in mind? I know that they did a giggle here and there, but nothing that lasted very long or hard or deep.

The BBC would only buy M*A*S*H on condition the laugh track was removed. I seen it with the laugh track and to be honest I didn't like it as it trivialised each episode. Laugh tracks are just awful. I have all of the MASH dvd's, thank goodness you can opt to turn laugh track off.

^ It can last for 10 years if you don't break the seal.

What is the expiration date for canned laughter? The topical stuff spoils faster.
