hi all, i was just wondering if any of you who have been to SCHUYLER VA. and seen the WALTON (HAMNER) house would like to tell what they felt or thought on first seeing the home. to me i had a strange feeling of being home. i don't know how to explain it but it gave me a calming feeling. EZ

I haven't seen it yet, but the Hamner house is so different from the Waltons house, that I don't know if it would affect me like that or not....

The Hamner home is a typical two story house common to upland South in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and many still exist on the Piedmont and in the mountains and plateaus of the South. I have only seen the Hamner house from a distance and it appears to be a 4 over 4 with a central staircase. I didn't pay much attention to it simply because this is a common architectual style where I come from. Many houses of this type are "L" shaped with a one story kitchen extending to the rear off one the downstairs rooms. I don't remember if this is an "L" house or not. It is certainly not like the Walton house on the TV program. I felt more at home in living room model in the Musuem.

It wasn't quite what I thought it would look like just because of the "tv" home we are all used to. And it wasn't as big as I thought it would be. The year I was there Jim still lived there. I had made reservations at Polly's and she was overbooked so she was going to have a couple of us stay with Jim. Wouldn't that have been something?!! However, he became ill the day before and was rushed to the hospital that night so we didn't get to stay with him. I can't imagine what that might have felt like. To be in the real Walton/Hamner home!

I agree with "gina". It was so different, and smaller, than the TV house that I didn't feel anything at all. It was almost disappointing. It's like many other houses of the vicinity and time frame. I was fascinated with the pool they had installed in the side yard. There were lots of pool toys floating around and it helped me grasp that this is a family that continues to live, not in the past, but in the here and now.

The Walton Museum website is announcing the Hamner house is now open for tours and overnight stays.
