Our county fair is coming next weekend. What are you doing still awake? We should both be sleeping by now!

Are you a game and ride person or do you prefer checking out the exhibits? I like to walk around and see the exhibits, animals and people watch. I also like to see what the latest item up for sale is. The Shamwow seems to continue being popular! I like the exhibits, the animals, and the women's crafts. And, the Slices and Dices building (Center of Progress). You know that building, "It slices, it dices, it removes hair from your dog, and put a shine on your car!!!"

Have you ever attended a county fair? If so have you ever entered anything in it? Was it small like the ones on The Waltons? Our county fair is a little bigger than the ones on The Waltons. They usually have carnival rides but not this year. I have never entered anything in the fair but know people who have. Our county fair is very small, much like the one featured on the Walton's. We used to go all the time when we were younger, but not anymore. It was always preceded by a grand parade. Our girls were in 4-H and always had projects of some sort entered, so it was always fun being involved. We have always attended the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines every single year since we were married 41 years ago. However, we will break that record this year and have to miss. According to reports and articles, Iowa has one of the best state fairs in the U.S. But, I know everyone's fair is the best to them. The Iowa State Fair was made famous by the 1945 movie, "State Fair," as many know. The fair grounds is set in a park-like setting and dates back to 1879. It really is an amazing fairgrounds with many Victorian era buildings still in existence. Our 'forever lost,' awesome historical "Women's and Children's Building" was torn down back in the 1970's and caused an outrage among Iowans. It would never happen today with the historical preservationists at work! I will have to look that movie up, Jan. I love old movies/musicals. Another of my favs is 'The Music Man', another Iowa based older musical.

All I can remember off hand is that Jeanne Crane was in the 1945 version. There is a 1962 version with Pat Boone and Ann Margaret but haven't seen that for years either. The music is wonderful! Yes, 'The Music Man' is great, too! Roger and I went to visit the birthplace and museum of Meridith Willson in Mason City, Iowa when we celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary at a historic hotel up there. It was great and they were playing the movie non-stop. Those old musicals are so wonderful!

The Iowa State Fair is August 13-23 this year, and it is one great and actually quite famous fair, but then I am prejudiced as that is all I know. I know you would love it and especially all the cooking displays, Kathy Lee! I LOVE that part of the fair! Our fair is listed in Patricia Schultz's best-selling travel book, "1,000 Places to See Before You Die." It's always been our annual celebration of agriculture and industry but in later years this 'food on a stick' craze has become all the rage. I'll just bet other state fairs of forum members here are doing the same thing. We have had a big 'hoopla' in the state of Iowa for quite a few years now pertaining to earlier and earlier school starts cutting into the Iowa State Fair's attendance. In April of this year a new state law was enacted banning all school districts from beginning school before August 23. These early school starts were killing the fair attendance and 4-H students couldn't bring their exhibits because they had to be back in school. I was so glad to see this law passed here although it isn't popular with school administrators! They are now forced to start a week to ten days later and don't like it.

I wonder how much of the school calendar is because of harvest (which i would think would include fairs)? I heard that in Kansas, harvest and the future deep snows are what made the school calendar.

I wonder how much of the school calendar is because of harvest (which i would think would include fairs)? I heard that in Kansas, harvest and the future deep snows are what made the school calendar. Our corn and soybean harvest occurs a bit later in the fall. The schools in my town are all air-conditioned but many in Iowa aren't, so the early to mid-August school starts, combined with bad heat and humidity, have been a big problem. Complaints about cutting into 'The Fair' were big, as I mentioned. I think the main reason legislators did it, though, was because there was actually a law already in place that was being abused...."Iowa schools were not allowed to begin until after Labor Day." But, waivers were allowed in the law 'for certain exceptions.' Well, nearly all the schools in the state were applying for these waivers.....and getting them. Thus, a firm law was enacted with no waivers allowed. The year round schools, which I think are fairly rare around here, are exempt from the law.

We start school in NJ after Labor Day. I hope it never changes. It is so hot in September that I can't imagine going in August. We have air but it does not always work that great. I have lots and lots of cotton clothing that can go right in the washer after a hot, sticky day at school!

When the kids were younger we would go to the Merced County Fair. They were in FFA and showed pigs. I myself never entered anything at the fair but my husband would put photographs in from time to time.
