Rich, my husband and I drove to Florida a few weeks ago, and we stopped at Mount Airy on the way. It was interesting and fun. Tom and I love Mt. Airy. We have friends who live there that we try to visit once a year. Did you go to Snappys diner and have a pork chop sandwich? We didn't spend a lot of time there. We were just driving through. We visited the museum and drove around and saw some of the sites in town. We missed the Snappy lunch though.

Tom has never liked pork chops, but he really liked that sandwich. In fact he ordered a second one to go. It's a boneless pork chop, pounded thin and lightly battered. They fry it in a skillet until the batter is golden. Then it's topped with beanless chili, fresh minced onion, coleslaw and fresh sliced tomato. It sounds like a weird combination, but it's very good. They open at 6:00am and take the last order at 1:45pm so you have to go early. Weird sandwich, weird hours, but you'll love it!

Thanks to all of you for the really good suggestions. My wife and I are getting excited and are looking forward to the trip. We will be going in May. We are both big fans of The Andy Griffith Show and The Waltons. Thanks again!

Hello. I'm new to the forum and I have a question. Has anyone been to The Walton's Mountain Museum lately? My wife and I are planning a trip (our first) to Schuyler, VA and we are hoping to visit the museum. Thanks.
Rich Hi Rich, This may help you plan your trip to Mt Airy: Google Mt Airy Chamber of Commerce. When the page opens click on " Information Center". It will drop a list of things to choose from. Select "Visit Mayberry". A screen will open where you can enter your mailing info and they will send you a packet of traveling information, places of interest, etc. On this site you'll also find various things to see, such as photos, videos, live feeds of Main Street.....lots of information to help plan your visit. When we visit there we stay at the Holiday Inn Express. It's very reasonably priced, the staff is wonderful and at breakfast (included) the staff as well as other visitors will share points of interest with you if you break the ice with "This is our first time here". You'll be surprised at how fast the conversations will start flying. Folks will come right over and sit down with you and your first experience of "down home living" will begin. In Mayberry there are no strangers. Hmmmm, just like here! Have fun! Oh yes, I almost forgot, be sure to stop in at the Managers social in the evening. It's in the same room where breakfast is served. Very casual, coffee, tea, soft drinks, wine and lots of first hand info and stories are shared. You'll love it.
