Now you are talking Jan. I want to try the applesauce cake this year. But I think it definitely needs a 'hard' sauce (as my mother always called it) Making plans for October, hope to meet you then The cake does need the icing as I think it would be a little too plain without it. The icing recipe for the applesauce cake is more of a traditional icing more than a hard sauce. My mother in law always made Christmas pudding (boiled English style). She would make a hard sauce every time she served the pudding. Hard sauce is thinner and is poured hot over the pudding. I would love to try a Christmas pudding (boiled). Have you made one Kathy Lee? Do you have a recipe to share? My daughter send me a mail order plum pudding each year (with a hard sauce), but I would love to try to make something like that. I hope I have the patience for that. LOL

Some people were dressed this year but more for Halloween. Maybe we could try Walton characters next year. Who do I want to be......? I'll go as Myrtle the goat. PatriciaAnne just chose the most popular costume there. You do realize now that everyone else here has to think of a second choice. (Oh Frank, there's always Lance and Jim Bob Jr...see? you have 2 more choices.)

LOL My husband's family is from England and they always made traditional English pudding. It is made with lots of fruit and other things, covered and then boiled in a pot. Then it stays in the refrigerator. My mother in law would slice off a bit, make the hard sauce, and serve it with the hot hard sauce on top. My father in law always loved the pudding. I have made the pudding and it is not too hard to make. I can share the recipe. Many years ago, my mother in law gave me the recipe and the family pudding bowl. The bowl was very old and had been in the family for years and years ( you can probably guess where this story is going). I put the bowl in a plastic bag and put it on the floor boards of the back seat in my car. I got home, opened the back door of my car, picked up the bag, and......CRASH! The bag had broken and the bowl had shattered on the garage floor! I did not know what to do. How was I ever going to tell my mother in law? Well, I told her and she was so sweet (she was the kindest woman). She said not to worry about it and that my father in law would probably not even notice if the bowl was different. He did not notice but I still feel bad about the bowl to this day. It was in the family for a billion years and I had it for a half hour and broke it!

I guess that bowl just decided it had enough!

Sorry to hear about the bowl Kathy Lee. It was an accident plain and simple and we know they just happen! Funny that Christmas pudding was just mentioned...we have one in the fridge right now. Hubby was craving fruit cake and took this out of the freezer. I will make a custard sauce for it I am thinking and have it tomorrow night...

My mom bought it and gave it to us for Christmas and it has been in the freezer since. I have thought of making my own but I make my fruit cake and that is enough although this year I am also making a golden fruit cake made with apricots and golden raisins.

So now I've been remembering "hard sauce" -- which, in my family, meant butter and sugar creamed together with vanilla.... and the "hard" part is either brandy, rum, or whiskey.... we used it cold, on several warm desserts.... haven't thought about hard sauce for at least 35 years, and now I want some

I think it was confectioner's sugar. Will have to go dig out the recipe.
