I am reading Earl Hamner's book "Fifty Roads to Town." It is very good and extremely well written but what a bunch of crazy characters and what a town! Just about the exact opposite of The Waltons! Was wondering if anyone else has read the book.

I read it about 40 years ago. I found it at the library the first time I checked out Spencer's Mountain, so I checked out both books and read them. I can't remember much about it, but I do remember that I liked Spencer's Mountain much better.

Differently not the Waltons but the book is a page turner!

Just got to the part where there has be a religious revival and everyone is running off and sleeping together. The revival stirred them up!

i read the book several years ago...It seemed a bit racy to me. It deffinetly is racy! I wonder where he got the ideas for the characters and town? Makes Payton Place look like Sesame Place! But, the book is very well written with great character development. You really can see the place and the people. Not a book I will forget!

Got the book when I was in Schuyler this past spring. I also have "You Can't Get There From Here." It was written by Earl in 1965. Going to start reading that tonight.

I've never read the book, but the fact that Earl wrote several Twilight Zone episodes shows what an creative mind he has.

Poe and London.... for over a year now, I've been trying to go back to classics I have never read -- not very successful.... couldn't get through "Uncle Tom's Cabin".... or Kerouac's "On the Road".... so, went back through some Shakespeare to get my spirits up !!
Today, I read "The Mayor of MacDougal Street" -- Dave Van Ronk's 2005 memoir of life in Greenwich Village from about 1955 to 1965, and then some.... absolutely loved it -- didn't get any chores done today -- brought back great memories of those heady times.... I always loved his music (outstanding songwriter and guitarist) but had no idea he was so knowledgeable and brilliant, a true philosopher.... although I didn't agree with his politics back in the day, it wasn't a big deal in the book and didn't matter anyway because he had so much to say on so many levels.... and now I'll enjoy his music even more.
