This TV show didn't seem to mind having different actors playing the same character (2 John-Boys, 2 Curts) What if someone else played Grandpa after Will Geer died? I'm thinking disaster if they did, no one could replace Grandpa. Don't even go there! But that's just my opinion. Any thoughts? Someone want to have me put away for even bringing this up?

We discussed this on another thread and I believe the consensus was that there could be a "grandpa-like" character (like cousin Zadoc) but no one could come and replace the real Grandpa.
I was watching an episode the other day and I was thinking how different it would have been if Grandpa and Grandma had been able to continue on the show. I think it would have been wonderful--even if Michael Learned had to leave. It would have made all the difference.

I can think of quite a few actors who could have played Grandpa very well from the beginning.... but once Geer set the tone, I don't think he could have been replaced.
With John-Boy and Curt, there was the advantage of the roles "disappearing" for the most part, so it was easier to replace the actors, whether you liked them or not... I had no real problem with either the new JB nor Curt... both actors did a decent job.
In addition to Grandpa, I don't think a new John, Esther, or Ike would have worked either... the rest, maybe....

I don't think anyone could replace Grandpa.......I really don't think John Boy being replaced worked, so I don't think they could have replaced ANY of the cast, they all seem to work so well together.

I don't see it working.
Who knows what they would have done if the show continued ?
" Grandpa comes back to life" on a very special Waltons.

Or, am I not getting your idea ?!

my idea was a soap opera "Grandpa comes back to life angle ", and he is played by a different actor.
You see him crawling out of his grave after being struck by a lighting bolt or something

You see him crawling out of his grave after being struck by a lighting bolt or something Back to the future IV. Marty McFly, transported to the 1940s Virginia, must get back to the 80s. As he sits in his car waiting for a lightning bolt to strike as per Doc Brown's scientific calcultations, a 1.21 gigawatt lightning bolt hits dead Grandpa instead, brings him back to life, and Marty is stuck on Walton's mountain with his DeLorean until he can find some plutonium. The Waltons family rejoices as Grandpa lives, and to remain alive he has to drink 1 bottle of recipe a day. We can write this script together, awesome.

I honestly think I could write a script for a movie-I couldn't write an English language textbook-but I think I could write a script. I've read a lot of them, and seen a lot of movies

I think Geer and Corby would have stayed on to the end of the series had they not died and fallen ill and it really would have made a big difference in that the thread of continuity in the family would have remained pretty much intact after Micheal and Ralph left. Mary Beth writes in her book that Will Geer often told her how privileged he felt at having such a role at his age and having spent many years as a blacklisted actor so I feel he'd have stayed on and I feel Ellen would have stayed on too.

Agree 100%. And why wouldn't they? They were great roles, they all loved the people they worked with. It would have been a wonderful thing, too.

.... and, that reminds me.... Much as I love Shakespeare's plays, that is because of his thought and language -- I really don't enjoy reading scripts -- 90% dialogue isn't fun for me.... when I had to do it for work, I viewed it as a necessary evil !!

Yeah -- it would have been great if Grandpa had still been around, even after Liv and John pulled up stakes....
BTW, Geer was working steadily when he took the role on The Waltons -- from the time he came back to work in the early 60's (after his blacklist period) until he started on The Waltons, he made over 60 appearances on various tv shows !!!
Not sure if he appeared in any movies during that time -- will look it up.

I was off a bit about tv shows he was on from the end of the blacklist until he started The Waltons -- more like 50 or so, but probably about a dozen movies, too.... and also see that he did other tv shows and movies while on The Waltons -- maybe 20-25 !!!
WOW... he probably didn't even need his Grandpa role to keep himself busy !!!
