I could eat the first course, but apple pie and melted cheese? I like apple pie and I love cheese in any form, but not combined. Never heard of this combination before. Maybe its a dish particular to the US. My husband got me started on that. Apple pie with a slice of cheddar on it. He said that's the way it was always served in his house when he was a kid. I had never heard of it that way before. He is from Minnesota and both his parents were from Denmark. So I dont know if its a MN thing or a Danish thing. All four of my family branches (Dutch, Scots, Welsh -- settled in the northeast) served apple pie with a slice of cheddar -- but I never heard of melting the cheese....

The cheese melts. I don't serving it like with melted cheese like cheeze whiz or velveeta. I mean just warn enough so that a fork will go through it when its laying on top of the pie. And the cheese is sliced thin when you put it on. In Wisconsin and Minnesota you can actually buy cheese for apple pies. Its called, appropriately enough "apple pie cheddar".

I understand.... in my family, one would never have the cheese and the pie in the mouth at the same time.... I believe the idea was that the crisp sharpness of the cheddar cleansed the palate and broke the extreme sweetness of the pie.... my dad in particular could hardly eat apple pie without being able to have a bit of cheddar here and there....

We try to live as basic as we can...My hubby does hunt but he is not one of those gotta shoot everything type...only what we need. Local veggies. My own baking. We have a small garden right now...tomatoes, cucumbers, squash. Ina few years we hope to have a larger garden and will be even more self reliant.

I'm glad I didn't read this thread when I was fasting for my procedure.

I have never had apple pie this way, but I love apples and cheese together so I bet it's very good.

I make a wicked Apple pie. Will have to make you one sometime! And, pecan pie with no shells for Mr. Forever!

Every time you eat a salad, a lettuce has lost its life. My husband has been responsible ((sob)) for the death of many oranges!

Mr. Forever would appreciate that. Not only does my momma ALWAYS have pieces of pecan shell in hers, but she also makes hers too dry.
When we went down on New Year's day to eat hog jowl and black eyed peas with her, she sent us home with two of her pecan pies. Mr. Forever wouldn't take a bite of them to save his life. LOL! He's afraid he'll crack his crown.

Tell Mr. Forever I am bringing him a pie! We'll trade for some of that potato candy. I make the pie so it is creamy and not dry at all. And not too sweet. Have been using the same recipe for years. And the crust is good also (homemade, of course ).

Speaking of meals at the Waltons...there were two episodes where John went/was going hunting and he talked about bringing back game for some rather odd breakfasts. In one episode (I don't remember which episode for either one of these), he went out hunting and came back with a pheasant and one of the women (Grandma or Olivia) said they would make it with biscuits for breakfast tomorrow morning. Another time he was going out to hunt deer and he said he hoped to bring back venison "for breakfast." (I thought a deer carcass had to "cure" a little bit before you ate it...?) Aren't pheasant and venison rather odd things to have for breakfast? I know in hard times you eat what you can get but they did have chickens for eggs, so they could always have eggs and probably most times they had bacon in the smokehouse.
