When you watch the cast in different roles, do you have a hard time not type casting them? Will you always see them as the cast we all know so well, and love so much? Can you accept them as a new character, or will they always be John Boy, Erin, Mama, etc. to you?
Also, can we try to make a list of our favorite movies with a cast member in it? I would love to see which ones people like. My list is this, until I see or remember more...
1) The IT-Richard Thomas 2) Save the Children- Richard Thomas 3) Last Summer- Richard Thomas

I think my favorite RIchard movie is Wild Hearts.... And, let's do tv, too -- in which case, I'm loving Ralph as Gibbs' father on NCIS!
In both cases, I can easily put aside their Walton roles -- which says a lot about their acting abilities....
Other than a few roles of Michael's, and some old movies with the "senior" cast members, we have little to pick from for the other actors....

Personally, I try to never "typecast" actors. I know that they are acting & why shouldn't they also be able to do many different roles? But it seems a lot of actors do get typecast by the public.....Bob Denver (Gilligan), Jimmie Walker (J.J. on Goodtimes), etc... For Richard Thomas - 1. Yes Virginia, There is a Santa Claus - (1991 TV movie) with Charles Bronson. I recorded this movie when it originally aired so I still get to enjoy it. 2. IT - (1990 TV miniseries by Stephen King) Very good, starred in it with John Ritter & Richard Masur (both in the Waltons). Will Geer - 1. Jeremiah Johnson - (1972 movie) with Robert Redford. 2. A Woman Called Moses - (1978) starring Cicely Tyson. The movie is about the life of Harriet Tubman. Sadly it was Will Geer's last role before he died. Will was busy during the 1970's not just being on the Waltons but also on Starsky & Hutch, Eight is Enough, The Love Boat, Medical Center, etc... Ralph Waite - 1. Cliffhanger - (1993 movie) starring Sylvester Stallone & Janine Turner. 2. Cool Hand Luke - (1967 movie) with Paul Newman. Also starred Robert Donner (Yancy) & Morgan Woodward (Boone Walton). It was also filmed before the Waltons. 3. NCIS - TV series with Mark Harmon. I love him playing Mark Harmon's Dad on the show (just wish they would show him much more often). 4. Roots - (1977 TV miniseries by Alex Haley) He played such a mean man in this & it was while the Waltons were originally being aired.

I haven't seen the cast in a lot of different roles although occasionally they do, but in your mind as Waltons fans, they will always be the Waltons characters first. I know Grandma and Grandpa, Ellen Corby and Will Geer were in Napolean and Samantha with a young man Michael Douglas and a young girl Jodie Foster about 1972 when the Waltons started. Sometimes you see actors or actresses on a show or movie just before their breakout role. I'm glad some of them like Richard Thomas, Ralph Waite, Michael Learned, Mary McDonough and Judy Norton still act some, and I respect those who choose to do other things as well. They will always be the Waltons first and we're glad a lot of them are still alive and doing well. Best wishes WmFan

I notice Richard Thomas seemed to play sketchy characters as a teen. Maybe that was the kind of roles for teens in the 70's. A far cry from John Boy Walton Thanks for sharing the video...I want to watch the whole thing. I like movies like this

I watched a little bit of that first clip you had and it looked on the you tube there that there might be a few more clips of it there. Was that Richard Thomas the funny looking clerk with the mustache. And that Jenny girl from the Waltons she's the one that went screaming up the stairs right. Someone always gets killed or has a life changing event in these movies . Spooky. WmFan

I will admit I haven't seen the cast in many other roles other than The Waltons, but the other day while I was flicking through our movie channels here in the UK I came across a film Richard was in, I didn't realize at first as I got distracted by a phone call but afterwards I heard his voice and even though it hasn't change from the Waltons this role was darker, I think the film was called Stalking Laura and I didn't like it at all, hearing his voice the same as the show and in the film he was killing people was a bit to weird as I will always know him as the gently John Boy, needless to say that movie didn't stay on for long ha ha

To me all of them will still be a Walton but i love seeing the actors in different roles to see how they act differently from being on The Waltons.
Michael Learned: - A Christmas Without Snow - Roots: The Gift - Scrubs
Ralph Waite - Roots - NCIS - Cool Hand Luke - Cliffhanger

Yeah, the movie is on there in "parts". Each part is like 10 minutes or so.
No, that guy isn't Richard, he comes in later.

One of my favourite Richard Thomas telemovies is Hobsons Choice. He stars as Will Mossop and Sharon Gless is his love interest. He is fantastic in it.
I've seen the one with Patty Duke and Sian Barbara Allen and it isn't too bad at all.
I love that Richard's characters are all so different. There was one that I watched and I didn't even realise it was him at the start. Beard and scruffy looking. The sign of a great actor I think.

Yes, I remember seeing Ralph Waite in Roots when I was a kid and was seeing him in the Waltons around the same time. His character in Roots was such a horrible man.
In these later years, I enjoy seeing him as Gibbs father on NCIS and Booth's grandfather on Bones.
If any of you ever watched an old show called Here Come the Brides, Will Geer guest starred in an episode of it a few years before the Waltons started. He played Candy Pruitt's grandfather.
I remember seeing Mary Beth McDonogh and Melissa Sue Anderson from Little House in a movie about 2 teenage girls who were practicing witchcraft. I can't remember the title.
Judy Norton had a small guest role on one episode of Stargate SG1. The only cast she interacted with was Michael Shanks (Daniel).
I've seen Richard Thomas in a lot of things.
