I found the following 1970's article info on ebay: Walton's Plain Talk is the header.
Walton's' Plain Talk!!! Everyone knows what the Walton kids are like on their successful show - they're simple, sincere, likeable people! But is it all an act or are they really that way? Has being on the show forced the kids to change drastically?
TV's Waltons are plain-living real people who get along with each other normally from day to day. Sometimes there's a family argument or hassle over something. Sometimes there's a disagreement or some kind of confusion. But the problems always get resolved soon enough without too much fanfare. They are normal people living normal lives!!!
ALL AN ACT? But when the director yells, "Cut!" and the lights on the set go down, do the Waltons stop being real, down-to-earth plain people? Do the kids go from "regular folks" to "snobby stars" in some kind of magical transformation? Are the people who play the Waltons really putting on a big show? Don't believe it for a minute!!! The real Waltons are just as simple and plain-living when you meet and talk to them as they are when you see them on TV! There's nothing phony about them at all!
A REAL FAMILY - "We're not goody-goodies or anything like that," Richard Thomas (John Boy) says, "but our sincerity doesn't come off with our suspenders! I can tell you for a fact that each and everyone of these kids is a fantastic person and I wouldn't mind it one bit if they were really my brothers and sisters!"
They are like a real family when you watch them working together. The older kids tease the younger kids and the younger ones play tricks on the older ones! But everything's done in a friendly spirit of good, clean fun. And like a real family, they help each other whenever help is needed!
A FRIEND INDEED! For instance, Mary McDonough (Erin) - all freckles and energy - calls on Judy Norton (Mary Ellen) almost daily! "And she's always there!" Mary insists, "I get myself into hysterics all the time but Judy always knows how to rescue me! And she doesn't put on airs or boss me around like a big sister - she just helps!"
The older kids are always glad to help the younger ones out. "They aren't brats like some sassy child actors I've run into", says Jon Walmsley (Jason), "we don't mind working with Kami (Elizabeth), David (Jim Bob) and Mary (Erin) 'cause they're really good kids!"
BIG CHANGES? Has being on the show forced the kids to change much? "I don't think we've really changed," Eric Scott (Ben) says, "we've grown up but our attitudes aren't very different. I mean, I still want to be an archeologist when I get older - that hasn't changed. And I don't think having to play 'simple people' has made us simple people! We were all pretty uncomplicated to begin with!"
THE REAL THING! When you sit down and talk to these Waltons kids, you know what Eric's saying is true. A good actor or actress can be whatever he wants to pretend to be. But when the Waltons finish a scene, they're still basically "plain folks"! There's nothing put on or phony about them. They're real - and really terrific!!!
