I would cut out Rose and her two grandchildren. Rose in my opinion did not replace Liv as she did not really do any 'mothering' to the Walton children other than look after Selina and Jeffrey and the show did not need another two children in the mix. The Rose/Stanley Perkins thing did not capture my imagination and Rose just seemed to do a lot of crying and sitting at the kitchen table.

I don't think I would cut anyone. If you cut anyone,I think The Waltons wouldn't be the same.

Definitely the Rev. Fordwick -- he was a veritable font of sanctimonious, bad advice. The people of the town would have benefitted greatly from his absence.

Oh he was awful in his initial episode, The Sinner, wasn't he? I really liked how John stopped him in his tracks from yelling at the children and calling them putrid etc. I attended a funeral in a Baptist church last year and the minister spent almost 30 minutes talking like that, I am like John Walton in my thinking and had he not brought the sermon to an end when he did I was about to take my kids and walk out even if it offended other folk. I too don't appreciate being shouted at that I'm wicked when none of us are perfect....

You have to admit that was a preview for Jack Tripper on Threes Company and the late John Ritter's great sense of humor. You might not see it that way , but that was his. Funniest Walton's episode. RIP John Ritter and thanks for the memories! He is still missed. WmFan

Hi Twinkle, Just my opinion again not right but I don't think Rose was really meant to replace Olivia at all. She just became a live in family housekeeper that the Walton family needed and supported at that moment. In my opinion and disagreeing with you again, that's how I saw Rose, not the new Walton mother or anything. Its not like she was John's new wife or anything. That would be a different situation, but no one repaces Olivia as the Walton's mother. WmFan

You're too late. One of them was already cut. There were 8 children in Earl Hamner's family. Ben's role was a combination of 2 of Earl's brothers. I can't think of anyone I would cut. Each person had his or her own role to fulfill in the family, and I can't imagine what it would have been like without them. Well, I guess we can sort of imagine it. John Boy left the series, Grandpa died, Grandma had a stroke, then Olivia left the series. Each time one of these things happened, though, it left a void that couldn't be filled, although the producers tried to convince us that John Boy was back by givng us a new actor, and they brought Rose in to try to fill Olivia's shoes (I guess). I agree with you Brenda. I think each character brought something to the show and like most I was disappointed when John Boy left the show. After losing so many characters and bringing Rose on, it was never as good IMO. I really think Ike & Cora Beth could have carried the show.

Great topic!
When Richard Thomas left, I would have written John-Boy out like they did but move heaven and earth to have Richard guest star whenever he could. The narrations at the beginning and end of each episode certainly kept John-Boy present, as did the mentions by the family and letters or whatever. Recasting was a boo-boo for sure, though I don't mind Robert Wightman.
I also think Cousin Rose and the kiddos were unnecessary. Though I adore Peggy Rea.
My least favorite children are Erin and Ben, but I certainly couldn't imagine The Waltons without them!

It must have been difficult for him to create a character who wasn't very likeable.

I realize that this is a hypothetical thread, so we're not going to change anything. I think that "The Waltons" was "The Waltons" because of the contribution of each character, so it's hard for me to imagine how it would be without any of the cast members. The series started to falter at the end when so many characters were cut due to leaving the show, death, illness, budgetary restraints, etc.
