After the recent thread about "cheeky" Ben, I got to thinking about some of my favorite Ben moments in different episodes of The Waltons. Ben, being a middle child, had a lot to live up to. John Boy and Jason with their writing and musical talents had to be tough acts to follow, but Ben did it quite well, and he came out shining in several episodes. Let's see if we can list some of them here.
I will start. This is not necessarily my favorite Ben moment, but it was the first one that came to mind. In the episode, The Chicken Thief, Ben wrote a poem and sent it off to Liberty Magazine. When he found out it was going to be published, he became worried, thinking John Boy would be angry because he had copied one of John Boy's poems. The poem, however, was not John Boy's poem at all, and as John Boy told him, it was even better! I think what I like about this is that Ben showed he had a talent for writing too, but he felt so inferior to John Boy that he didn't think his own poem would ever live up to the quality of John Boy's writing, so if it was good enough to be published, it must have been because he had copied John Boy's work
A Winter Mountain by Benjamin Walton
Our mountain in winter is something to see At times it is just like a person to me. A giant in white all covered with snow It changes each day as the heavy winds blow. And when I'm alone and I go for a walk It's almost as if that old mountain can talk. It seems to say Welcome my Winter Friend. I was here at the beginning, I'll be here at the end.

My favorite Ben moment is in a Christmas episode. I don't remember the name of the episode but it is the one that has Verdie selling her homemade cakes to raise money to buy the children at her church some Christmas presents. Ben has been saving his money to buy some insoles for his shoes so he can be taller. Verdie is robbed of her money as she is delivering her cakes at night. Ben goes to see Verdie at her house to return the stolen money that he claims to have found when he went to search the area that she was robbed at. Verdie knows that Ben has given her his own money because of the denomination of the bills. She tells him that he is truly a man in her eyes because of what he has done.
