You want Grandma in the house getting served tea and biscuts in the bedroom, but nobody sees her. What is she a shut in. That's bizzare! Not as bizarre as you might think. She had suffered a stroke. She very well could have been a shut-in. That could have been part of the storyline, although I admit that it would be hard to keep her "hidden" all the time. Another option could have been that she was in some kind of rehabilitation hospital. I'm not sure how much rehabilitation was offered to stroke patients back in the 1940s, but I'm sure Ellen Corby was undergoing some kind of rehab or therapy during the time she was absent from the set. The problem the writers and producers had was that this wasn't planned. They had to scramble to come up with a storyline, and I guess staying with distant relatives worked for them.

Although I know the reason for the changes, I find it 'unbelievable' that they would have Grandma living with other relatives taking care of her. She lived at the Walton house all her life, then suddenly when things get rough for her (the stroke), the family can't take care of her anymore. Really? That flies in the face of the whole basis of the show. I understand that the actress was unavailable, but couldn't they have had her stay in her room all that time. LOL And maybe mentioned that they were bringing Grandma some tea or biscuits. Instead they ship her out to relatives that she never hung out with before. Actually I don't remember them ever saying she was being taken care of by other relatives, just that she was visiting. Also, I remember one episode where they said she was off taking care of her sister in Buckingham Co. during one of the times that Ellen Corby was absent after returning to the show after her stroke. I don't remember which episode though, but I think they said her sister's name was Angie.

I don't remember ever hearing the name Angie on The Waltons, but you could be right about that too. There are so many details other people come up with that I don't remember at all.

Here's another thought.... Several months back, we discussed the facts that Corby's husband was a cinematographer, and that she spent her first 12 years in show biz (while taking acting lessons) as a script girl and that she had input into several Walton scripts.... So, I'll bet she had at least some input into the scripts after her stroke.... and knowing her feisty personality (possibly enhanced by the frustration of new limitations), she wouldn't have stood for much she disagreed with !! I guess if they were okay with her, they're okay with me
FYI -- according to Atkins, "sister Angie lives in Buckingham county, S8, E18".....

Hmmm.... well, here's something to think about -- I have noticed that for me, in my "golden years", I am reaching out more and more to relatives I haven't seen in a while.... wanting to reconnect and spend some time with them before it's too late.... and not just relatives, but old school friends, too. Also -- old friends and far-flung relatives are reaching out to me, too.... I am spending more and more time catching up with people. So, I can find some reasonable meaning to Esther's visiting around here and there.... that's my justification, anyway !! Helps me not to get too irritated with the writers !! You want Grandma in the house getting served tea and biscuts in the bedroom, but nobody sees her. What is she a shut in. That's bizzare! No, not saying I wanted her as a shut in. Just saying that since the actress was unavailable, they could have found a way to have her nearby. She had been in that house all her lit, helped raise all those kids, then poof she has a stroke and is written away from the family and home she loved. That is bizarre.
