Ding dong, varichard has solved the mystery! obviously my perception of time is up the left as I thought it was a season 2 episode but no, it was the minstrel. I'll tell you why I got the seasons wrong...the channel is playing two episodes each morning six days a week back to back and so each season only takes about 2 weeks to get through so it was actually about 3 weeks ago I saw that episode, not the fortnight I thought it was Anyway, thanks for getting into the spirit and helping me out...so did anyone else think it was a special crazy little moment in that scene? I like the little chuckle that grandma gives...

Sorry, but if you look at the man's skin, it looks like he drank throughout the whole show.

I have just watched this episode and LOVED it.
I don't actually recall seeing this one before either, I see what you mean with it being a Real cute moment.
Michael and Ralph playing John and Olivia are the best, they made a great choice in picking them two.
I did chuckle at John Boy and Grandma in the scene right after the one with Olivia and John
But I did feel sorry for Olivia when Mary Ellen said she didn't want the life her Mother led, poor Olivia

Sorry, but if you look at the man's skin, it looks like he drank throughout the whole show. According to various articles, he started drinking about age 30 (1958).... He was at a very low period when he got the job on The Waltons, and stopped drinking soon thereafter, at age 44.... doesn't sound like a bad alcoholic, does it? Sometimes it takes folks a while to realize they have been drinking too much, and I bet his daughter's death in 1964 didn't help much. It's excellent that he got stopped at only 44 years old..... Good for him !! Anyway, it sure looks like he'd had a few in this early episode.... perhaps he got in a bit of trouble with the powers that be and stopped drinking because of it !!??

Further to what I wrote a few hours ago (just above), I went back to refresh my memory about Ralph's early history.... and found that his 1958 drinking start-date coincides exactly with his entry into the world of acting. No real surprise there....
Also noticed that his mother's name was Esther !!!

Once again thanks for the detective work - just watched the Minstrel this morning and it is the episode I was looking for. Its very much an improvised moment and I love it. Just want to add to the discussion regarding Ralph's drinking prob; I remember quite some time ago, in the 80's, reading an article about the Waltons and Ralph Waite credited Micheal Learned with providing him with the support he needed at the time to tackle the problem. I thought I'd share that - and the episode about Cora-Beth's drinking came out of his own experiences.
