Someone please help me with this - there's an episode in series 2 which I saw maybe last week or the week before and there's a great moment early on in the episode between John, Olivia and Grandma that I very much believe was totally spontaneous and not edited out for that reason. It's either at breakfast or lunch and Olivia is at the kitchen sink, Grandma is doing something at the table and speaking and suddenly John comes in shouting something about 'I've got loads of apples!' and rushes behind Grandma and sweeps Olivia off the ground...this happens behind Grandma's back out of camera shot but you can hear Micheal Learned giggling in the background and Ellen Corby looks over her shoulder towards them and giggles at what seems to be some horsing around by Ralph and Micheal. The way Ellen Corby laughs is completely out of character for Grandma because we never actually see or hear Grandma laugh in the show - I think Ralph Waite was fooling around and acting up for that particular scene and it is a great little off-the-cuff moment that I only noticed for the first time recently. So, it's a Series 2 and the episode is one where near the beginning John and Grandpa have been out collecting or buying bags of apples (maybe peaches...) and John comes rushing in with them to Olivia.
I know we all like a good mystery to solve here and test our observational powers/memories - so any ideas?...it's driving me crazy!

It might be The Minstrel where The Waltons go and pick apples at this orchard to help get some money but not sure

But "The Minstrel" was in Season 1. I can't think of another episode where they were picking apples.

But "The Minstrel" was in Season 1. I can't think of another episode where they were picking apples. I think the episode Twinkie is referring to is one where John receives some apples in payment for something.... don't think the family had picked them.... but can't remember which ep.... I'll go look through the Episode Guide for season two.... Later: went back and read every synopsis for the episodes in season two -- didn't help. I thought maybe something else in the episode may have had to do with how they made money, so -- was it The Theft, or The Bequest -- Twinkie, what else was in that ep?

Seems we are getting closer to identifying this episode....I know it is late into season 2 as we are now into the first few eps of season 3. In the scene I described it is at the beginning of the show and you dont see him picking the apples, only him rushing in with a huge sack of them. Ah, just had a thought...I think it might the ep.20 The Fulfillment where blacksmith Curtis and his movie-fan wife Ann grow attached to orphan Stevie who is staying with the Walton family. Grandma was peeling a load of apples later on in the episode and trying to get the little boy to help her and apple-peeling featured through the rest of the episode so I think this may be the one

I watched that episode last night and you're right. John walks in with 2 bags of apples and mentions having cobbler the next night for desert and has GREAT news for the family. He literally sweeps Livy off her feet and out of the scene toward the sink. Grandma smiles, Mary Ellen seems to be blushing and several are giggling. When the camera pans back to John and Livy, I had thought I missed something. It seemed odd. I rewound back a few minutes and watched again. I thought he must have her pinned up against the sink, lol! Anyway, the whole family is hired to pick apples for a nice payday. Mary Ellen tries to run away to Virginia Beach with a young hobo guitar player but changes her mind when he pushes her away. John Boy falls out of a tree during picking and ends up in a cast. All the children vote to give the majority of their share of the apple picking money to Mary Ellen to fund a trip to Washington DC, even though she didn't help pick apples; since she was off somewhere throwing herself at that hobo playboy.

Okay, so it is The Minstrel? I'll have to get out my Season 1 DVDs and watch it. I have been sitting here watching The Fulfillment, th eone about the little boy Stevie. I made it to the 20 min mark, and the only sign of apples was when Grandma was peeling some on the porch, then Stevie sneaked over and took one.

Come to think of it, John was known to have a snort or 2 during lunch. Maybe that scene was after lunch and John was feeling his oats!

Yep it was the Minstrel the last episode shown in 1972 during Season 1 John and the family pick apples for money, and Mary Ellen runs around spending time with the wayward Minstrel singer Jamie

Come to think of it, John was known to have a snort or 2 during lunch. Maybe that scene was after lunch and John was feeling his oats! A snort or two. John never drank in the Baptists house only at the Baldwins or Dew Drop with the recipe. Olivia and Grandma would god forbid alcohol!

Brenda, thanks for posting those pics. I will have to watch them when I have a chance. But it seems odd to me to see Grandma in a full blown smile in those two pics. I know I have seen her smile, but never like that. LOL

Just remembered something -- Ralph Waite was known to be a heavy drinker, who had stopped or at least gotten better control of it, sometime during the Waltons series.... I think we can assume that he was still drinking during seasons one and two !!
