I don't much enjoy the programme Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman, one of the problems I have is that the main character is pretty much depicted as 'perfect' she always seems to be right and from all of the many episodes I've seen, she never seems to make mistakes/have flaws. It got me wondering, is this the reason some people don't like John-Boy? He certainly seems MUCH less 'perfect' than she is. Do the people who dislike John-Boy dislike her too? I love John-Boy, but she annoys me.

One of the common threads that runs between the Quins, the Waltons, and the Ingalls is their ability to be role models for their communities.
The Quins and the Waltons both have a near perfect individual family member namely Dr. Mike and John boy.
Charles Ingalls is fairly perfect but not as much as the other two.
I do not dislike any of them any more or less than their other family members.
Maybe their characters are written the way they are so that we have someone to look up to.

For instance, I could never watch Dr. Quinn because of Sully.... just didn't like Joe Lando's carefully-constructed physical appearance/looks, whereas many women drooled over him!! Hmmm.... never saw John-Boy as an example of perfection.... have to think about that,,,. When guys I knew said they didn't like The Waltons because of him, I just assumed it was some kind of jealousy -- of his intellect, achievements, etc. Now, I'm trying to come up with instances where he wasn't so "perfect" -- but it isn't easy !!

Well, I think what bothers me that every decision she makes seems to be right, and that's unrealistic. Plus, her views seem very much to be the enlightned non-prejudice views of the present day, rather than what a woman from the nineteenth century would have actually probably been like. I can't think of too many things like this with John-Boy, or at least, nothing that seems quite so jarring. But, the main thing, may be that, in Dr. Quinn pretty much every character BUT HER seem to be very flawed, whereas in The Waltons, every character, including John-Boy has flaws and virtues. I mean, imagine Dr. Quinn WITHOUT Dr. Quinn, everybody is so useless nothing would ever be done (well, except maybe by Sully). Whereas, in The Waltons, they were able to lose John-Boy and still have things go on as usual.

And, yup, you're right -- the Waltons characters were beautifully depicted as having both virtues and flaws.... nice way to put it.

I watch Dr. Quinn occasionally and I do like it, though it is more sugary than The Waltons. Dr. Mike does make mistakes, though, and some doozies that I've seen!
Sully is a hunka hunka burning love.
John-Boy is quite flawed and totally loveable. I think most men that didn't like him were purely jealous.

I can think of an instance where John Boy wasn't so perfect. It was when he sold the meadow to that land company that wanted to do hydraulic mining.

Sully looks like a girl. Hank is the real man.

I stopped watching TV years ago, even cancelling our television service. Although I do not watch television anymore, I still see news on the internet, so I am somewhat aware of what shows are popular, what actors & actresses are popular, and so on (and I am also clueless about some shows - I just recently heard of Downton Abbey...guess I do live under a rock sometimes). I do have both Dr. Quinn and The Waltons on DVD and rely on them if I need or want to watch something. I love both shows but do admit they can be a bit sappy at times or unreal in the sense that in real life things do not always work out perfectly. They are feel good shows and do lift my spirits, and I do not feel mentally drained or as though I have been exposed to the filthier side of society after watching an episode of either series. The characters are people I can relate to or admire or appreciate their decency. If I had a daughter, I certainly would rather her watch Dr. Quinn versus the garbage that is out there today. The character of Dr. Quinn, to me, is more of a role model than someone like Lindsay Lohan, the Kardashians, or the cast of Jersey Shore. Dr. Quinn, the character, does seem perfect at times but she does make mistakes. I have seen all of the Waltons characters make mistakes, too. It is good to see the characters have their ups and downs, although in real life there isn't always a perfect, happy ending. Sometimes, for me, it is good to see a happy ending in an episode if I am sad about something in my life. Something to lift the spirits. Just my once cent worth...
