I know The Walton's and Little House have been compared, but I personally like the " Nellie " character on Little House. I thought she brought a lot to the show. I would say that " Martha Rose " was the mean girl on the Walton's.
Do you think they could/should have used Martha Rose more to be a nuisance to the Walton kids, like Nellie was to the Ingall's kids?

I always thought Marcia Woolery was full of herself & I never understood what John Boy saw in her. As they say....most guys look for someone like their dear old Momma & Marsha had none of Olivia's qualities! LOL!! I figure they didn't use Martha Rose very much (unlike Nellie on LHOTP) because the Waltons kids had enough brothers & sisters to play with, without having to go find more playmates plus I think they would distance themselves from a classmate like that instead of wanting to be around them as much as possible. I know when I was in school, I knew what kind of people my parents & grandparents expected me to surround myself with. The ones that could lead you down the wrong path, the smart alecks, the ones who thought they were better than you, etc....those people I would just say "Hi" to & keep on going.

I think that The Waltons show, in general, tended not to dwell on the undesirable folks in the neighborhood.... to a fault, sometimes.... although in the last few seasons they did bring in more controversial people in an effort to hopefully attract more viewers. Always thought that was not the way to do it.....
I agree with you, Daniela -- Nellie was a hoot! -- whereas Martha Rose was just annoying !!!

Nellie was the meanest kid ever! When I was younger, I would think, "I could never be like Nellie!". Now as an adult, I laugh at some things she says and does, but I still think, "I could never be like Nellie!" I think she would have tormented Erin the most. I think she would have had the most fights with Mary Ellen

Martha Rose was just a small town girl whose dad made a few dollars more than the rest of the dads. She thought that, that made her all that and a bag of chips.
Nellie is the spawn of Satan. Maybe that implies who her mother is.
For the record, I do not think that Cora Beth is as evil as Harriet. Cora settled in marriage and is frustrated with that and it is written all over her.
Nels and Ike are very much a like.

I always wondered why in the world Nels married Harriet. How did such a nice, caring, decent man fall in love with her? She really must have been a different person before they married or else she had him hoodwinked.
In real life, Katherine MacGregor (Harriet) is a very nice person. She is a big animal lover & supports animal charities plus years ago she personally looked for homeless animals on the street & provided food for them. I don't know if she is able to do that part anymore or not because of her age now (she was 88 in January). Of course, Alison Arngrim (Nellie) isn't anything like Nellie in real life either.

Nellie and Martha Rose were both mean. Little House's Nancy was more mean than Nellie and Martha Rose.

Erin would have hardly been "worth it" for Nellie -- 'tho Nellie could have easily used Erin "for practice" !! I really can't imagine any little girl being as bad as Nellie -- that's what made it a hoot to me.... Martha Rose was more realistic, I think..... but not as much fun to watch!

I've always thought that Martha Rose was the Nellie of Waltons Mountain. I think every school or community of children has its share of spoiled rich kids who think they are better than anyone else.
I think Michael Landon did a great job casting Alison Arngrim for the part of Nellie. In the Little House books, Nellie Oleson and the Oleson family appeared in 3 of the books: On the Banks of Plum Creek, Little Town on the Prairie, and These Happy Golden Years. On the Banks of Plum Creek was set in Walnut Grove when the girls were children. Nellie was depicted as a rich, spoiled brat who was mean to Laura and Mary and rude to Ma. The other two books were set in DeSmet, SD, when the girls were teenagers. Nellie's father had lost everything, and they were living on a homestead and off the charity of relatives in the east. This didn't stop Nellie from being rude and obnoxious, however. She sucked up to the new teacher, Eliza Jane Wilder, and tried to become competition for Laura with a clueless Almanzo, who took Nellie along on buggy rides with Laura while they were courting. A quote from the book: "Laura was amazed, that a man who knew so much about farming and horses could know so little about a girl like Nellie."
Here is a Garth Williams illustration of Nellie taking her doll away from Laura at a party at the Oleson's in Walnut Grove.
Interestingly, Mrs. Oleson is never described as being mean and spiteful in the books like she was on TV, but I guess we can assume that she was. After all, she was the one who raised a mean and spiteful daughter. In the book, On the Banks of Plum Creek, Mrs. Oleson came across as a polite hostess at the party, trying to make Nellie and Willie behave, and bringing Laura some picture books to look at after Nellie grabbed her doll away.

Did you know that the character Nellie Olsen was a composite of 3 different girls? Nellie from Plum Creek was Nellie Owens and Genevieve Masters. Nellie from Golden Years was Stella Gilbert

Nancy was like the spawn of Satan. She locked a girl in an icehouse, she could have died. There was an episode where she got her way about something by whining and crying and when she was alone she had this evil grin on her face and was twisting her dolls head all the way around. Maybe they did that instead of her head twisting 180 degrees. Nellie was awful too, letting everyone think she was paralyzed so she could get back at Laura.

That evil smile used to make me mad, but I do find it funny now. Ya, not sure if the Walton's would have been ready or prepared to deal with a Nellie or Nancy
