We are on vacation from UK in September and will be driving the Parkway from Waynesboro to Roanoke - any suggestions for anything Walton that we could experience on our trip? OK I know that it was filmed in California but just thought that there might be something of interest....

Where will you be before you get on the parkway at Waynesboro? Schuyler, VA, is just to the southeast of Waynesboro, about 30 or 40 miles. It is just off US Rt 29. Schuyler is the boyhood home of Earl Hamner, You can visit the Waltons Mountain Museum and the home where Earl and his brothers and sisters grew up. You can also see the Baptist church the family attended and shop at the Waltons Mt country store, located in the bed and breakfast. If you are a Waltons fan, I definitely recommend you visit Schuyler.
Check google maps for directions.

I am curious about where you'll be before Waynesboro, too.... it would be a shame to miss the Skyline Drive, the northern part of the Blue Ridge Parkway "system".... also, I guess youi'll be here too early for the autumn colors, but the drive is just as beautiful in full greenery!
A day trip up the Skyline Drive will take you near the Luray Caverns of VA, which would be fun and interesting for you if you've never seen beautiful caverns with stalagmites, stalactites, etc. GORGEOUS! A different kind of "spectacular" from the drive....

Thanks for the information guys. We fly into Washington and head down 66 and 81 to Waynesboro. Can't fit Skyline in this time. But Schuyler is a definite visit. Will let you know how it goes.

If you're coming from Washington, you might want to consider taking I-66 and US Rt 29 to Charlottesville, then on to Schuyler, instead of going all the way to I-81, then backtracking to Charlottesville. After you leave Schuyler, you could then head over to Waynesboro to get on the Parkway. Compare the routes on Google maps to see what I'm talking about. You would get on Rt 29 just a few miles past Manassas National Battlefield.

I'm dying to do the whole Blue Ridge Parkway / Skyline Drive again.... because I made the mistake of starting at the northern end and driving south -- WITH THE SUN IN MY EYES THE WHOLE WAY! Next time, I'll head out early in the morning and drive north, so I can really take it all in
