This might not make sense.
okay, John was always talking about building a house on the moutain.
We can see there use to be a house already there( the old fireplace or whatever it was)
Ok, why did they travel all the way down to build the current house in the 1st place?
Why didnt they just build one the same place where the old was when it was time ?
Did they want to be closer to civilazation and other people ? Was there some kind of threat of bad weather where it was dangerous to live there for a long time ?

Good question. I wouldn't want to be too far away from people, especially with 7 kids, and 2 elderly people. If there was an emergency, someone might have died before they could even get to the bottom of the mountain.

That had to be it. I'm sure there were not cars and roads when the ancestors lived in the original house.

Am I right in thinking that Grandpa actually built that house when he was younger and starting a family? Maybe that's where he and Grandma wanted it, but then Olivia joined the family and both John and hers dream was of course to build a house up higher?

Two thoughts -- the "old house" may have still been standing when the other house was built (sometimes family members want their own place)..... and, maybe they wanted to save the mountain for the trees they'd need for the sawmill..... Towns grow up in valleys, not up on mountains..... As the area became more "civilized" they probably wanted to be close to the church, school, store, etc..... I think John and Livy's dream of having a home with a gorgeous view was just that -- a dream -- and they knew it was unrealistic, at least until their golden years when they could move to their "retirement home" while hopefully one of their kids retained their house.....

If you read the book Spencer's Mountain, you'll find that the theme running throughout the book is of the father building a house up on the mountain. It has been many years since I have read the book. I'll have to get it out and reread it. But if I recall, the Spencers lived with Grandma and Grandpa in their house. Clay Spencer's dream was to build Olivia a house up on the mountain, but when the children started coming, there was neither the time nor the money, so it ended up being just that - a dream. I think that carried over to The WaltonsTV series. Someone who has read the book more recently might be able to shed some more light on this.

On one of the Reunion movies Elizabeth said that maybe Drew can build the dream house. Of course Elizabeth and Drew never got married, at least on the series

Another thing to remember they had a saw mill and would need to be where they were to be able to deliver the lumber.

In the movie, "Spencer's Mountain," Clay Spencer (Henry Fonda) needed money to send Clayboy to college. He had started building on the "dream" house but a rich man wanted to buy the land from Clay. So Clay went & set the framework (that he had completed so far on the house) on fire. Then he sold the land to the guy for Clayboy's college education. He goes home & starts telling Olivia that he needed fix the kitchen cabinet, paint, etc......I'm really going to fix this house up. Is it okay with you for us to just keep living here? He let her know what he had done & she was totally fine with staying put in the house they already lived in. It was just as important to her for Clayboy to get a college education as it was to his Dad (Clay).
In the tv series/post movies.....Ben & Erin's husband Paul need to fill an important contract & there is just no way they can do it on time. John Sr. tells them to go up the mountain & get all of the lumber that he had stored up there to build the dream house with so they could fill the order.

I guess Martha Corinne, et al., may have been the first (after the stone fireplace) ..... or, at least, similar timing to Zeb.....

Didn't Martha Corinne and Boone live on another Mountain? Where they lived was called Blue Rock Creek.
