Whose goodbye scene is your favourite? John-Boy in The Achievement Zebulon in The Empty Nest Olivia in The Parting John in The Move
These are the episodes in which we say goodbye to one of the main characters. Which one do you think works the best? It's a shame that Esther was never really given one, considering that she 'leaves' more than any character (though I realise the first time would be very hard!). I haven't included the episode when Rose leaves, I can't really remember if they make a real 'thing' of it or not, I seem to remember being a bit surprised that she was gone, it didn't seem like her last episode. Plus, keep in mind 'best' does not mean saddest, or else I know The Empty Nest would win! Having said that, I would say that I pick The Empty Nest heh, and also The Parting, these two I find especially effective! So what is your choice?

The most impact full for the series was John boy but by far the saddest is Olivia..if you do not shed a tear..oh my.

Most definitely for me it is The Parting. Just thinking of that episode makes me want to cry.

I'm not good at remembering episode names, except for my favorite, The Prophecy, but when John Boy was ready to move out and they're sitting out on the porch at night and the realization hits everyone at once it seems and one by one, Grandpa, Livy and John get up and go into the house and John Boy goes to the tree and cries, I believe.. that was moving...

When John Boy left for NYC and when Olivia left because of her tuberculosis - I cried and needed tissues. When Grandpa, Curt, and G.W. died I cried, too. I wonder how hard it was for Michael Learned and Richard Thomas to shoot those good-bye scenes? Sometimes when actors shoot those tearful good-bye scenes the tears represent their character and their real life feelings. I imagine the other Waltons actors were like family to them.

The Parting -- heart-wrenching! It's never easy when the mother, the heart of the home who holds everyone together has to depart for a little while!

John leaving in Season 9 in the Move to take care of Olivia wasn't as dramatic as the others, but he was the last parent grandparent to leave and the series was left to the kids and supporting cast to close in 1981. also I've said it before but I wish Olivia had hugged John Boy goodbye in the Achiement instead of just darning his socks. Richard Thomas getting on the bus in the Revelation, his last series appearance was also sad. WmFanSportwriter
