I took notice at times, it always seems everything is within walking distance: the school, Ike's, the Baldwins. But whenever two people get in the car and drive there, it takes forever to get there. There was an episode where John Boy had his car at the school and Miss Hunter was out walking and he gave her a lift to Ike's. It took so long for them to get there. I guess they do that so they have a chance to have their conversation but I just get such a kick out of that.

Same phenomenon happens over at LHOTP when Laura and Mary have to walk to school. One day it is close enough for Laura to run back and get what ever she forgot, then the next time we see them it is taking half the day to get to school.

I think what they considered walking distance back when and what we consider walking distance now are two different things. It was nothing back in the 30's or even further back for kids to walk a mile or more to school especially in rural areas, whereas city kids probably only walked a few blocks to school. Nowadays most kids either get a ride with parents or take the school bus.
